 Established in 1994 as a direct response to the National and Community Service
Trust Act of 1993.
 25 Members are appointed by the governor and meet quarterly across the state.
 Awards grants to local organizations enabling the establishment of AmeriCorps
and other National Service programs.
 Operating as a “point” organization for promoting and recognizing service
volunteers and by supporting quality service projects.
 Oversees the AmeriCorps program.
Since 1994, more than 250,000 men and women have served in AmeriCorps, providing
needed assistance to millions of Americans through projects ranging from tutoring, youth
mentoring, public safety, housing rehabilitation, health care, environmental issues, and
disaster relief.

The National Preparedness and Response Corps (NPRC) is a national direct AmeriCorps
program sponsored by the American National Red Cross. The mission of the NPRC is to
provide vital emergency assistance to communities affected by disasters and increase
preparedness in the areas of greatest need before disasters strike by recruiting, training and
supporting young adults who will provide integrated community outreach and education
through Red Cross service activities focusing on Homeland Security.

Members serve as a team, partnered with teachers, in grades K-8 in the inner city of St.
Louis. Teams focus on literacy and communication skills often using experiential learning
and service learning as tools. Members also address other issues i.e. – individual tutoring,
developing peer tutoring systems, after school and summer expanded learning, parental
involvement, and assistance to ESL and bilingual students.

Members serve in teams with police, schools, and neighborhood agencies. The program
emphasizes community problem solving, conflict resolution, and mentoring youth.

Community mediation and neighborhood stabilization are also a focus. A special unit of the
Safety Service Corps serves as an emergency response team to the American Red Cross,
FEMA, US Forest and National Park Services, as well as state and local disaster agencies.

AmeriCorps Trail Rangers assist the development of the St. Louis Riverfront Trail and
Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to strengthen impoverished North City riverside
communities, reinforce community responsibility, and provide educational and financial
opportunities to its residents. Rangers continue to maintain the Trail area and provide
services to over 13,500 annual Trail users. Rangers also give presentations that cover
the topics of native plants, history, recycling, and their role.

Sports4Kids is a full-time, school-based program overseen by full-time site coordinators
who provides play-based, youth development programming including game supervision,
leadership development and conflict-resolution training. Site coordinators deliver five
program components: (1) supervision of new sports and games during recess and lunch
periods; (2) work with classroom teachers to deliver physical fitness units during class
time; (3) development of a Junior Coach peer leadership program; (4) an out-of-schooltime program that provides homework help, healthy snack, and sports and games
activities; and (5) interscholastic developmental sports leagues for coed volleyball and
girls’ basketball.

Members provide reading intervention to at-risk Kindergarten – 5th grade students reading
below grade level through daily one-on-one tutoring sessions focusing on skills and
strategies to break the trend of reading failure. This is an “AmeriCorps Reading Coaches”
model project that includes English as a Second Language component to help bridge the
language barrier in meaning and comprehension for the growing Hispanic population of this
community.

innovative early education program via yearlong one-to-one relationships. Jumpstart
college student Corps Members are paired with preschool children from low-income

and initiative skills for one year. Through this relationship, Jumpstart inspires children to

PAVE AmeriCorps Members provide one-on-one tutoring to at-risk students in the Eldon R-I
School District. Tutoring in communication arts/ reading and math occurs during the school day

58,000 volunteer Stream Team Members in Missouri to adopt local streams and work on water

It is the goal of the St. Joseph Youth Alliance and its partners to reduce substance use
and abuse among youth and to strengthen collaboration among community partners
through the development and implementation of expanded services for youth. This will

philosophy to create an approach to community building that has the potential to
complement, strengthen, and expand substance use prevention efforts through

UMKC-IHD, along with its partners the Missouri Planning Council and local Senate Bill
40 Boards developed a multi-site program “Community Support Navigators”, the
purpose of which is to increase the productivity, independence, inclusion, and selfdetermination of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
AmeriCorps Members in this program mentor individuals with developmental disabilities
and their families to access and navigate needed resources, support access to existing
generic community programs, and support the development of self-advocacy and
leadership opportunities.
