Mise En Scene • Settings can be INTERIOR or EXTERIOR • Settings are carefully chosen to match the genre of the TV drama How Does Mise En Scene Help Audiences? Think of a favourite TV program/Film and consider one of its most memorable scenes/set pieces to answer this question. Using your knowledge: • Of mise-en-scene so far, write down the settings that you think might be used in: • A historical drama • A police drama • A school drama • A family drama • For example: a hospital drama would use operating rooms, corridors, offices, homes, staff quarters, car park, etc. What would these sets be like? • Old/new/modern/well equipped/stuffy? Costumes and Make up as Mise En Scene • Costumes and make up are an essential part of mise en scene – we make the same judgements about characters from their appearance as we do from the mise en scene. • How do they help the audience? What is their name? Age? Favourite food? Do they read? Favourite film? Do they go on holiday? Are they popular? Do they have siblings? Where would they shop for clothes? Food? Do they use the internet? Are they on Facebook? Etc etc! Now design your own... • Create a film character and annotate (just like we have done) – draw a picture by using photoshop and write down character traits. Print out and bring in for next lesson. • (you can copy and paste a celebs head onto a different body for instance) • Think about how you can use MIS-EN-SCENE to help you design a DVD menu in the future for a film you are considering to work with
