World News (1959)
Fidel Castro becomes the Prime Minister of Cuba.
Castro was born on August 13, 1926. He attended the
University of Havana and graduated with a degree in
law.
World New (2009)
US Airways Flight 1549 crashes in the Hudson River after
hitting a flock of geese. The plane was headed to
Charlotte, North Carolina from New York on January 5,
2009. The plane lost power in both engines as it crashed.
All passengers escaped.
World News (1959)
Alaska and Hawaii become the 49th and 50th states in the U.S.
Alaska became a state on January 3, and Hawaii became a state on
August 21.
World News (2009)-
Michael Jackson, a world-famous performer, is found
dead on June 25 in his Bel-Air mansion. He was
supposed to make a comeback tour just months later.
The death was later ruled a homicide.
World News (1959)
Pioneer 4 is the first American Spacecraft to flyby the
moon. It was the first U.S. probe to escape from
Earth’s gravity. The spacecraft was still in orbit as of
1969.
World New (2009)
North Korean President, Kim Jung-Il, releases two
American reporters to the United States. The two
reporters were arrested while on a reporting trip
near the North Korea-Chinese border in March.

Dwight D. Eisenhower is president. Future president Richard
Nixon is the vice-president. Dwight became the 34th president
and held office for two terms. He died 1969. He was later
proceeded by John F. Kennedy.

(2009)
Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president, is
sworn in. Joe Biden is his vice-president. Obama
became the 44th president on January 20, 2009.
Obama also won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.
Sports (1959)
The Boston Celtics win their second NBA championship,
sweeping the Minneapolis Lakers 4-0. The victory is also
the first of an eight consecutive NBA championship run
for the Celtics.

Kobe Bryant leads the Lakers to their 15th NBA
Championship defeating the Orlando Magic. 4-1. Kobe
Bryant was also named the Finals MVP for the series. Kobe
Bryant now hold four NBA championship rings and one
MVP award.
Entertainment (1959)
Frank Sinatra wins his first Grammy award for “Best
Album of the Year,” with Come Dance with Me. Sinatra
was born on December 12, 1959 in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Frank Sinatra is well-known for his music and eventually
established his own record company, Reprise Records.
Entertainment (2009)
Blink-182 goes on a reunion tour joined by Fall Out Boy, Asher
Roth, Taking Back Sunday, and many more. The band originated
in Poway, California. The founders were Tom Delonge, Mark
Hoppus, and Scott Raynor. Raynor was later replaced by current
drummer, Travis Barker.

William Dobell wins the Archibald with his painting Dr.
Edward Macmahon. Dobell was born in Newcastle of New
South Whales and Australia. Dobell is known for his ability
to paint in a style that adapts to suit his characer in the
painting.

Andrew Wyeth dies at the age of 91. Popular during the
20th century and commonly referred to as the “Painter of
the People.” Wyeth was primarily a realist painter. He
liked to paint the land and people around him.
Fashion (1959)
Flary dresses and bobby socks were popular among women
in the 1950’s. Suits and straight-legged pants were popular
among men in the 1950’s.
Fashion (2009)
In today’s times, youths have taken an interest in the “punk”
or “emo” fashion trend. This usually consists to dark
clothing tight pants. The style is very popular among high
school teens and college students.
Prices (1959)
In 1959, the average gas price was about .25 cents a gallon.
That price has risen a considerable amount since then. The
prices, though, did drop in between 1959 and 1963.
Prices (2009)
Gas prices average about $2.59 in the United States. They are
expected to rise in the future. Some people predicted that gas
prices would rise to six dollars per gallon. As demand for gas
continues to grow, the price of gas will increase.
School (1959)
Segregation was still alive, but steps were being taken to
end it. Many attempts were tried to full integrate schools
but only a few blacks were allowed to attend these school.
By the Fall of 1972 all Little Rock schools were integrated.
School (2009)
In today’s world, high school life usually consists of class and
football games on the weekends, such as Maryville High
School Rebel football games. Some common activities among
students include going to the movies, bowling, skating, and
going to the mall
Movies (1959)
Disney releases Sleeping Beauty to the public. It is one of
the top-rated movies of the year. The movie quickly
becomes a favorite among children and adults alike. The
movie can still be seen in homes across the world.
Movies (2009)
Transformers 2, a sequel to Transformers 1, is released. It
makes about $16 million on opening night. Stars such as Shia
Labeouf and Megan Fox. Most of the male population see the
movie just for Megan Fox.
Social Activities (1959)
Drive-in theaters were very popular in the 1950’s. It was a
popular place to take your date or hang out. There are still
some working drive-in theaters in the U.S. such as the one in
Maryville, TN. Many popular movies can be seen there.
Social Activities (2009)
High school football games are very popular events on
Fridays. Many teens spend their Friday nights cheering for
their high school team. A student section can be seen at most
football games cheering and making noise for their home
team.
Fad (1959)
In 1959, Frisbees came out and were instantly a hit among kids
and adults as well. Frisbees can still be seen in the parks and
yards around America. A popular sport now is Ultimate
Frisbee, a football-type game that is played with a Frisbee.
Fads (2009)
Texting is the best form of communication among people in
the world. With texting come slang words such as “LOL” or
“OMG” that are often used to abbreviation certain
expression. The downside of texting though is the prices if
people go over their limit. Some prices can hit within the
thousands range.
