Chemistry History Vocabulary 5 Feb 13, 2012 Alchemy- Early scientists (alchemist) that developed a framework of theory, terminology, experimental process and basic laboratory techniques. (Thought they could turn base metals to GOLD.) Jābir ibn Hayyān – 9th century Muslim chemist who took the early alchemy ideas and created laboratories of science. (Considered the father of chemistry) Chemistry History Vocabulary 5 Feb 14, 2012 Robert Boyle – 1650 – refined modern scientific method and attempted to develop the first atomic theory of matter. • John Dalton (1802) first published table of relative atomic weights Chemistry History Vocabulary 5 Feb 15, 2012 Dmitri Mendeleev (Russian scientist -1860) He is credited as being the creator of the first version of the periodic table of elements. Using the table, he predicted the properties of elements yet to be discovered. JJ Thompson (1898) Discovered the electron and isotopes, and invented the mass spectrometer. Chemistry History Vocabulary 5 Feb 16, 2012 • Ernest Rutherford- (1911) Theorized that atoms have their positive charge concentrated in a very small nucleus. He is credited with first "splitting the atom" in 1917 in a nuclear reaction between nitrogen and alpha particles, in which he also discovered (and named) the proton. • Neils Bohr (1913) His atomic model introduced the theory of electrons traveling in orbits around the atom's nucleus. Chemistry History Vocabulary 5 Feb 16, 2012 • Modern Electron Cloud (1926)- a model of the atomic structure that places electrons in shell layers not orbits around the nucleus. • Particle Accelerator (colliders or atom smashers) – a machine that sends subatomic particles in a collision course.
