Please be advised that seating is limited; therefore, please arrive at least ½ hr. prior to the event. Summer course offerings include: GED College Prep English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) Certified Microsoft Office Civil Service Exam Prep The MEOC also offers a Development Assistant Program. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in the fundraising offices of nonprofit organizations. Besides discussing things like the tax differences between for profit and not-for-profit organizations, the role of boards of directors and the critical role of donors, students gain hands-on experience with The Raiser's Edge, the contact management program used by most nonprofits. In addition, students receive supplemental training in customer service, interviewing and resume writing. Internship opportunities and job placement assistance are available. Our programs are free to New York State residents who are 18 years or older, meet the state's low-income guidelines and are not college graduates. Let’s Get Ready Free SAT and College Prep Program: June 8 deadline We still have a some spaces available in our Let's Get Ready programs this summer but the deadline is approaching - June 8th! Let's Get Ready is a FREE SAT and College Prep Program. High school students are taught and mentored by college students to learn SAT strategies and an overview of the college application process. Students also participate in college tours, career day and a financial aid workshop. Last year, Let's Get Ready served over 2,500 students throughout the northeast with average SAT score increases of 110 points. Details: Programs throughout NYC Two nights a week from approximately 5:30-8:30 Targeting rising seniors to prepare for the October SAT First priority given to students who qualify for free and reduced lunch and are first generation college bound Classes start the week of June 18th and go through August 10th. New York Drives Program is Now Recruiting: June 7 & 14 Orientations New York Drives is an exciting and FREE program that allows for people to receive their driver's license to move on to work training programs focusing on TV/Film Production Assistance, Cable Installation, and Wood Working. They will review the timeline for implementation in NYC, and offer participants exposure to the kinds of Common Core tasks that NYC public school students will be asked to complete. During the second half of the Forum, facilitators will lead participants in small-group discussions about the implications of Common Core implementation for community-based organizations and other programs that work with students outside of the high school classroom. YOUTH EMPLOYMENT FAIR: June 28 (Registration Required) The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) in co sponsorship with Department of Administrative Services (DCAS) will be hosting its Youth Employment Fair on Thursday, June 28th, 2012 from 10am to 1pm at The Former Emigrant Savings Bank,49-51 Chambers Street (Between Broadway and Elk Street), New York NY. We currently have space for 400 young people ages 16-24. We would like for your organization to identify participants who have shown exceptional leadership skills and good work ethic. Once all participants are registered, we will send out the full list of participating retailers and corporate companies. All participants are encouraged to wear business attire and bring several hard and electronic copies of their resume. Please encourage your young people to participate in the Department of Labors Youth Works Program before they come to the job fair which will increase their chances of gaining employment throughout the year. If your organization has resume building and job readiness programs, please help your recommended participants prepare for the job fair. Vocational Conference for Youth in Foster Care: June 29 New Yorkers For Children is hosting a Vocational Conference for youth in foster care, sponsored by BNY Mellon, at the Fashion Institute of Technology on Thursday, June 28th. The goal of the event is to help older youth in foster care, who may not be college bound, explore the professional world and different opportunities available to them. The day-long conference helps youth gain a greater understanding and confidence in resume writing, goal setting, and interviewing skills, in addition to providing them with the opportunity to meet myriad New York City organizations that provide vocational training and/or employment readiness programs. There will be a few organizations that have paid internships, so encourage your young people to bring copies of their resume. Scholarships for Youth in Foster Care: Due July 13 New Yorkers for Children is excited to announce our new round of scholarships for college students in foster care. Guardian Scholars Program The NYFC Guardian Scholars program is a comprehensive program for youth in foster care who are enrolled at Hunter College, John Jay College, City College, or Kingsborough Community College. The Guardian Scholars program provides an academic scholarship that can be used towards tuition, room and board, textbooks, school supplies, and other living expenses. NYFC provides the essential financial, academic, and emotional support for Guardians Scholars during their entire college experience. You must: Be a highly motivated student currently or formerly in foster care in New York City o If formerly in foster care, must be in care on or after 16 th birthday Be currently enrolled or accepted to Hunter College, John Jay College, City College or Kingsborough Community College Be an incoming freshman or sophomore An application can be retrieved here. Spirit Award The NYFC Spirit Award is a $10,000 educational scholarship awarded each year to an individual in foster care who is attending a 2- or 4-year college and is succeeding in college. The recipient is a young person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, a commitment to his/her community, the determination and ability to overcome the barriers to academic success, and is willing to represent the experiences and voices of youth in foster care as a spokesperson for NYFC.
