As I was strolling through my hometown of Altrincham, I came across Nicholas Edwards; a wealthy and well-known merchant from Wrexham, whom my father adores. I was not pleased to be in his presence, as he was most rude and appalling at my father’s candle-light supper last month. I never quite understood why my father was so keen on including Sir Edwards, after today however I could barely grasp the woeful truth and the real reason my own flesh and blood; my father, invited this snobby businessman that is not even a faithful and believing Christian! Air was drawn out of my lungs as my father sternly announced my engagement to Sir Nicholas Edwards the 3rd.I fainted into the arms of Gilbert Piers– my true love. No, Mr. Piers is not a wealthy or educated man from a line of noble fore-fathers, but I know deep within my sorrowed soul, that he is my soul-mate, and I shall never be happy with another man, regardless of his prosperity and nobility. As a result of this preposterous command, I have come up with a plan with my dearest love. Mr. Piers and I are running away together tomorrow night. This decision was extremely difficult to make, because the thought of the pain I will bring upon my dear family and my friends has jabbed an excruciating sword through my already wounded heart. But I cannot live a lie. I simply cannot. My marriage to Sir Edwards will bring only grief and pain to everyone.”Love is like a flower”, mother always told me.”Love’s colors are warm and beautiful. But the buds can only blossom if they are treated with care.” I know now, that there is no longer a place for me in Altrincham and that I cannot agree to marry Sir Edwards. I will write to you as soon as I am able to! With lots of love, Milicent Langley
