You must take notes on each section. Keep all notes together in one Hilroy notebook. Most of the notes should be in bullet
points. Only #4 #5 and #6 should be written in sentence form. Take notes on:
1. Characters (in bullet points): What do you learn about the ones mentioned in this section? Chris/Alex and Jon (the
author and narrator) should be in each section of notes. Do not repeat any details. Only comment on what is new
about the character in each chapter.
2. Setting Details (in bullet points): How is the setting different in this chapter? What atmosphere is created due to the
setting? How does the setting influence/guide or change the plot?
3. Plot: (in bullet points) Five to ten main action points that happen in each section. (Note: this part is tricky because of all
the flashbacks. Do your best!)
4. A Key Quote (one for each chapter): Choose one full sentence from each chapter that you feel is important or that
summarizes what you have read. Write out the quote, include the page numbers and then write a few sentences that
explain why you chose the quote as being important.
5. 5 new vocabulary words per section (not per chapter). For each word, write out the sentence it comes from, the page #, a
dictionary definition as well as an original sentence that demonstrates that you know how to use this new word properly.
These notes will be checked in class on the date that the reading is due. It is treated as homework that can be tested unannounced in class
on the day that is due. Please keep in mind that even on days where there is no test or notes, you will be expected to have read the
chapter(s) so that you can fully and completely engage in the discussion about the novel and participate in the activities.
