Text Talk - 300
Below is part of an interview with Jane Goodall, a scientist who has
researched chimpanzees for more than 50 years. Read the interview and
decide which type of text organization is being used.
What is the most human-like behavior you saw in
chimpanzees?
Chimps can be deliberately deceptive. For example, [one] day a
young male called Figan looked up [and saw] a banana no one
else had seen. He glanced over and saw three older males [close
by, so he left without the banana. Then, after] they left [Figan]
came back to [take the banana.]
What’s the biggest difference between humans and
chimps?
Talking. Because we can discuss ideas, we can teach about
things that aren’t [here]. We can draw from the distant past…and
plan the distant future.
Question/Answer
Text Talk - 400
Read the paragraph below and decide which text
organization structure is being used.
The way Americans prepare their hot
dogs depends on where they live. Hot
dog lovers in Chicago often use
yellow mustard, dark green relish,
…[and] tomato slices…on their hot
dogs. In the south, however, people
put coleslaw on their hot dogs. People
from New York like their hot dogs
with a lot of onions, and Kansas City
residents enjoy their hot dogs with
sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese.

Read the paragraph below and decide which text
organization structure is being used.
Having straight teeth is important. Teeth that
are crooked…affect the way a person chews
and talks and how their smile looks. Because
they have unnatural spaces, crooked teeth are
harder to clean and more likely to have
cavities. One [way] to [fix] this is to…[get]
braces and retainers. [These] work by putting
gentle pressure on teeth to straighten ones that
are growing, or have already grown, out of
place.

Which of the statements below can you infer from the following paragraph:
Toads are no longer as common in some
areas as they were a few [years] ago. The
growing use of insecticides has reduced
their numbers. The chemical sprays
usually do not harm frogs or toads, but
cut down the animals’ food supply.
a) Gardeners are frustrated that insecticides do not get rid of
frogs and toads.
b) When there are not many insects (bugs) to eat toads are not
able to survive in an area.
c) When insecticides kill the bugs, frogs eat toads instead,
which decreases the number of toads in an area.
B) When there are not many insects (bugs) to eat
toads are not able to survive in an area.

Which of the statements below can you infer from the following paragraph:
Imagine pulling into a service station to
fuel up your car. But not at the gas pump
or electric battery charger—at the air
pump! That’s not hot air, either! The next
generation of cars might run on thin air.
Wouldn’t that be an incredible way to cut
both pollution and dependence on foreign
oil?
a) It is safer to drive cars that use batteries rather than cars that run on air.
b) Pollution and dependence on foreign oil are problems that we should try to
solve.
c) Cars that run on air would be more expensive than ones that use gas.
B) Pollution and dependence on foreign oil are
problems that we should try to solve.

What text organization strategy is being used in this
passage?
There are several possible reasons why my brother has
had straight A’s. For starters, he never misses a day of
school, unless my mother makes him stay home because he
is contagious. He sits in the front of all of his classes and
away from his friends so he has total concentration on what
the teacher. He also stays after school to participate in the
tutoring program. When he comes home from school, he
doesn’t play first, he finishes his homework and then reads a
book. He doesn’t get distracted by the television or telephone
like I do. As a result of all of these things, he is able to keep
his grades up and earn a 4.0.

What two text organization strategies are being used in
this passage?
During the Civil War, a woman named Clara Barton
heard stories of wounded and suffering soldiers and felt
she needed to help. She urged people to donate bandages
and medicine. She also headed a group that searched for
missing soldiers. After four years of this work, Clara moved
to Switzerland. It was there that she first learned about a
group called the Red Cross. In 1873 Clara returned to the
United States. In 1881 she started an American branch of
the Red Cross. As the result of Clara's hard work and
leadership, the Red Cross grew and still helps those in
need today.
