They learn to understand and produce simple expressions and are introduced to the cultures of some Spanish speaking countries. The emphasis is placed on vocabulary development and simple grammar. Throughout the course students apply language skills to real-life communication. Students in this course learn to exchange information in simple terms. The main goal for this course is for students to progress towards a novice level ability in using Spanish in school and the community. Class meetings are supplemental to home-study activities. Therefore, out-of-class assignments make up the larger component of this course. It is important that students complete all assignments on time. Student Expectations Students are expected to be prepared, attend all classes, and actively participate in class discussions. In addition, students are expected to complete all assigned work on time and to the best of their ability. During class session, students are expected to speak mainly Spanish with minimal English. Students are expected to stay in class for the entire period. Personal needs (bathroom breaks, water filling, eating lunch, etc…) should be taken care of before/after class or during the lunch period. Frequently leaving class is disruptive and disrespectful to the instructor and fellow students. Students are expected to be respectful of the instructor and fellow students. If students find themselves facing challenges that are likely to adversely affect their performance in this course, please see the course instructor before or after class at the earliest opportunity. The instructor will be available by phone, email or in person to address homework questions or to discuss the course material in more detail and is more than willing to help in any way to improve the students’ learning experience. Supplemental academic tutoring for this course may be arranged through Frontier Tutoring; parents should call 907-268-4233 to arrange for tutoring. Assignments Daily Participation: Listening and speaking are essential to learning a language, and all students will be expected to participate in class everyday. Students will receive a maximum of 5 participation points per day. Lateness, disruptive behavior, inattentiveness, refusal to participate, speaking in English excessively, etc… may result in loss of participation points. Homework: Homework will be assigned daily, primarily from the Realidades companion workbook. All assignments are expected to be completed and turned in on the day they are due. Homework will include vocabulary and grammar exercises from the textbook/workbook and various handouts passed out in class Frontier Tutoring LLC, an Alaskacompany 2 Classroom Tutorials Program Spanish 1– Fall 2015 (these won’t necessarily be noted on the syllabus). Students will also be expected to memorize new vocabulary as it is introduced. Students should read the chapters assigned on the lecture and assignment schedule to prepare for class ahead of time; daily studying of the material is also encouraged to reinforce new skills and vocabulary. Mini-projects: Three times throughout the semester students will have a small creative project related to vocabulary that they will complete outside of class time. Further instructions for each individual project will be provided for students with plenty of time for preparation before they are due. Semester Project/Presentation: At the end of the semester each student will give a 5 minute presentation about themselves in Spanish. Visual aids will be required. Each student will present their final project the last week of class. This will be an opportunity for students to be creative and also to demonstrate both their oral and written communication skills. A guideline/rubric laying out expectations and a grading outline will be provided for students with plenty of time for preparation before the projects are due. Extra Credit: Extra credit opportunities will be made available to students throughout the semester. Weighting for extra credit will be equivalent to homework assignments. If a student has a significant backlog of missing homework, I will not accept extra credit. Exams The class will be divided into three segments, with an exam at the end of each section. Exams are cumulative in that students will be using skills built upon throughout the semester, but vocabulary and grammar will focus on the material covered in that particular segment. Exams will test students on grammar, vocabulary, cultural topics, and written, oral, and listening skills. Assessment Daily Participation: 25% Homework: 25% Mini-projects: 10% Exam #1: 10% Exam #2: 10% Exam #3: 10% Final Presentation: 10% Final course letter grades will be determined using the following scale: 100%-90% = A; 89%-80% = B; 79%-70% = C; 69%-60% = D; 59%-0% = F All grades reported by Frontier Tutoring are preliminary and must be transcribed by a Family Partnership Charter School sponsor teacher for purposes of the student’s FPCS transcript.
