Character Analysis: Character types
Characterization is the method used by a writer to develop how the character looks, acts, and thinks.
This activity gives you a chance to become familiar with the four types of literary characters and apply
that knowledge by identifying these character types in The Giver.
Character Development


A flat character is not fully developed. The reader only knows one side of the character.
A round character is fully developed with both good and bad traits. The character becomes a
“real person” to the reader.
Character Change


A static character does not experience a basic character change throughout the story.
A dynamic character does experience a basic character change triggered by events of the
story. The change is an internal one.
Directions: Label each character from The Giver as either static, flat, round dynamic, or a
combination of character types (round and dynamic; round and static; flat and static). Explain why
you labeled the characters as you did.

Plot Chart
Plot is the series of events that makes up the story. The rising action is the progression of events and
development of the conflicts that makes the story more interesting. The climax of the story is the
place where everything that has been brewing reaches its boiling point. This is the point of no return.
The falling action takes place after the climax. The falling action usually consists of a reversal, which
shows a change in the characters’ situation. Finally, the resolution clears up the complications of the
plot. In this activity, you will plot the major events in The Giver.
Directions: Fill in the plot chart below.
