Paper #3: Juxtaposing Antigone or Trifles with another text Due Date: Length: 4-5 pgs. Format: Double spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Create a header with your last name and page numbers. Cite pages parenthetically. Include a works cited page if you choose a work from outside our class texts. What is juxtaposition? For this paper you will draw on the close-reading and analytical skills that you developed while writing your previous two papers to juxtapose Antigone or Trifles with an additional text. After selecting an additional text, you should choose a common theme, symbol, character type, setting, idea, narrative structure, etc. that is explored in both pieces and discuss how pairing these two texts creates a commentary on this idea. Juxtaposition is like comparing and contrasting, as you are discussing what is similar and dissimilar between the two portrayals of a particular concept, but it should also go beyond a simple compare and contrast. You should be sure that while you are explaining how the portrayals of this concept are similar and different you are also explaining why it is IMPORTANT that they are similar or different. *Although there will not be formal conferences for this paper, you are more than welcome to ask or email questions and bring drafts or ideas to my office hours. Choosing a piece for juxtaposition: For this paper you must write about Antigone or Trifles AND one other text. The additional text that you choose to write about can be a poem, short story, or other work from this unit or a previous one. However, you MUST write about a work that you have not already written about (i.e. if you did a close-reading of “A Rose for Emily” for your first paper, then you cannot choose to juxtapose “A Rose for Emily” with Antigone or Trifles for this paper. You also cannot write about A Curious Incident). *You may write on texts other than Antigone or Trifles only if you get my approval. *You do not need to use critical articles for this essay, but you are welcome to bring in additional material with approval. However, make sure that you are still focusing on the juxtaposition of your two texts as that is the focus of this assignment.
