The History
History of Black College Football Classic Games
The history of Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) football classic games began in 1924
when Alabama State College and Tuskegee Institute played in the Turkey Day Classic in Montgomery,
AL. After over 75 years of tradition and history, HBCU Football Classic Games have become an integral
part of the fall athletic environment around the country and has became a great financial opportunity of
both public and private sector business in the cities in which these classic games are played in.
Classic games generally fall into three categories. First is the traditional rivalries games that have grown
so large that school stadiums can’t accommodate the number of people planning to attend. The same
schools play each other ever year in a professional stadiums or arenas. Because of the number of
people that attend, these classics are likely to be scheduled around holidays like Labor Day or
Thanksgiving.
The second category of Classic Games features a host school playing a different opponent each year.
These games normally carry all the pageantry associated with big time football. Often, ancillary activities
are scheduled; focusing on the benefits associated with the city with the game is to be played in.
The third category includes events that have an identity of their own. In this category, major cities around
country many in which don’t have any HBCUs located there. In this case, the city invites different teams
each year. The New York Urban League annual Classic which is played at the Meadowlands on East
Rutherford, NJ and the Ford Football Classic that is played in Detroit, MI are two examples to game a
few.
Regardless of the category, Classic games provide all the excitement of a post season bowl game. Fans
come from miles around not just to cheer for their favorite team, but to be entertained with the weekend
activities and events these classics showcases.

The History
The History of North Carolina HBCU Classics
North Carolina is one of the few states that have a deep rich history of the Black College experience. North
Carolina is the host of 10 HBCUs:
• Bennett College in Greensboro
• Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City
• Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville
• Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte
• Livingstone College in Salisbury
• North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro
• North Carolina Central University in Durham
• Shaw University and St. Augustine’s College both in Raleigh
• Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem.
Strangely, it has only been one Classic game that is worth noting. The Aggie-Eagle Classic had been played for
over 25 years. The first five years the event was played in Charlotte. Up until 2004 the Aggie-Eagle was played
in the Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. This event would bring will over 25,000 people to Raleigh many who
where not alums of North Carolina A&T or NC Central, but many came to experience the game, entertainment,
and night life affiliated with any football Classic.
Since 2004, the Aggie-Eagle Classic has not been played leaving a wide open opportunity to allow the Triangle
to bring back the experience that became an annual tradition.
6
The Idea
Create a new football classic that will be home to
the Carolinas but will work with local partners with
a heart for the Triangle.
