Course Aim/Goals: The goal of grade eleven social studies and history is to help

population growth, wealth creation, environmental change, and world governance.
The history program examines the conditions, ideas, and events of the twentieth
century which gave rise to these issues.
Unit 1: Human Rights
Unit 2: Population
Unit 3/Unit 4 (Combined): Environment/Wealth/Poverty
Unit 5: World Governance

There will be a Unit test after each unit and smaller assessments of the learning
completed throughout. A final exam will conclude this course.
COURSE EVALUATION:

Unit Tests 20%
FINAL EXAM 30%
-Final exam will be written during exam week
TECHNOLOGY:
Each student will have access to their MacBook Pro’s for the duration of the
program. Planning for a Video Conference with a Holocaust survivor has already
begun as well as Shark Water Director; Rod Stewart. We are also looking into the
possibilities of volunteering at a soup kitchen in Edmonton where students will have
the opportunity to interview individuals; this will highlight the targets within our
3rd unit.
L to J: Students are expected to know and be accountable for 60 terms throughout
the course and will be expected to define them and use them in an appropriate
sentence.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
1. Be on time and be prepared.
2. Respect the learning environment, fellow classmates, and the teacher. If you
are a disruption, you will be asked to leave the classroom. You can only reenter with an apology. It is up to you to collect the materials you have
missed.
3. Raise your hand if you have a question or concern.
4. Be part of the class through participation in classroom discussions and
activities. The more you can infuse yourself into the learning within the
classroom the more you will benefit yourself in terms of learning.
5. Cell phones, mp3 players, text messaging or any electronic devices will be
confiscated if used in the classroom immediately. A parent must call before
the device is given back. If your parents need to contact you during class
time have them contact the school office. (IN THE EVENT that the teacher
permits these devices and technologies- students will be informed in
advance.)
6. When the teacher is giving a direct lecture and asks for computer closed, lids
must be closed immediately. Those failing to abide by this rule will have to
write their notes on looseleaf. Failing to respect the person(s) talking more
than once in this manner will result in loosing computer rights for as long as
the teacher decides.
7. Make up for missed work. Ask a classmate what you missed while you were
away first before inquiring with your teacher.
Learning Target Book: Every student is receiving a comprehensive book of all
learning targets that will be taught throughout the course. Students are expected to
use this book to gauge their learning and ensure all material is being learned.
Enhanced Learning Opportunities:
Video Conference with Felix Opatowski or John Freund
-Potential: Field trip (Mustard Seed Organization, Edmonton, AB.)
Resources Used:
There are countless websites, videos, articles, case studies and beyond that will be
