Course Outline Holy Rosary High School Course Social Studies 20 Teacher (s) Ms. Mann Grade 11 School Year 2012-2013 Course Aim/Goals: The goal of grade eleven social studies and history is to help students understand the major issues facing humanity at the end of the twentieth century. The social studies program examines issues such as human rights, population growth, wealth creation, environmental change, and world governance. The history program examines the conditions, ideas, and events of the twentieth century which gave rise to these issues. Unit 1: Human Rights Unit 2: Population Unit 3/Unit 4 (Combined): Environment/Wealth/Poverty Unit 5: World Governance ASSESSMENT: There will be a Unit test after each unit and smaller assessments of the learning completed throughout. A final exam will conclude this course. COURSE EVALUATION: Assignments 50% Unit Tests 20% FINAL EXAM 30% -Final exam will be written during exam week TECHNOLOGY: Each student will have access to their MacBook Pro’s for the duration of the program. Planning for a Video Conference with a Holocaust survivor has already begun as well as Shark Water Director; Rod Stewart. We are also looking into the possibilities of volunteering at a soup kitchen in Edmonton where students will have the opportunity to interview individuals; this will highlight the targets within our 3rd unit. L to J: Students are expected to know and be accountable for 60 terms throughout the course and will be expected to define them and use them in an appropriate sentence. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: 1. Be on time and be prepared. 2. Respect the learning environment, fellow classmates, and the teacher. If you are a disruption, you will be asked to leave the classroom. You can only reenter with an apology. It is up to you to collect the materials you have missed. 3. Raise your hand if you have a question or concern. 4. Be part of the class through participation in classroom discussions and activities. The more you can infuse yourself into the learning within the classroom the more you will benefit yourself in terms of learning. 5. Cell phones, mp3 players, text messaging or any electronic devices will be confiscated if used in the classroom immediately. A parent must call before the device is given back. If your parents need to contact you during class time have them contact the school office. (IN THE EVENT that the teacher permits these devices and technologies- students will be informed in advance.) 6. When the teacher is giving a direct lecture and asks for computer closed, lids must be closed immediately. Those failing to abide by this rule will have to write their notes on looseleaf. Failing to respect the person(s) talking more than once in this manner will result in loosing computer rights for as long as the teacher decides. 7. Make up for missed work. Ask a classmate what you missed while you were away first before inquiring with your teacher. Learning Target Book: Every student is receiving a comprehensive book of all learning targets that will be taught throughout the course. Students are expected to use this book to gauge their learning and ensure all material is being learned. Resources Used: There are countless websites, videos, articles, case studies and beyond that will be accessed during the Social Studies 20 course. There is no textbook for this course.
