Time for Change
The 2014-15 school year marked the
beginning of a new era in Ashland.
The George M. Verity Middle School Patriots
became the Ashland Middle School Tomcats.
The color scheme and name were not the
only things that changed over this time.
The third floor was nearly completed and
turned over to staff and students.
It seemed to take a l o n g
time, but finally, the
AMS gym was completed!
Construction continued throughout the year!
We became proficient at Fire Drills
The front of the school became the
back, and then the front again…
…and the entire school began
The 20 Book Challenge!!!
AMS students took the time to read
over 4,000 Books!
And every class devoted
some time to…TIME

Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.
-Sergei Rachmaninov
We learned that MUSIC rocks!
To stop the flow of
music would be like
the stopping of time
itself…

They watched the Kentucky Derby, which is said to be “The
Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports.“ The 2015 winner
was American Pharoah. The winning time was 2:03:02.
In Art, students looked at the color
wheel as a clock, determining primary,
secondary, and tertiary colors and
combinations.
AMS makes time for art!
The Discovery Team did a study on the
time element involved in the 1960s and
compared the important issues to
today’s world.
They also studied Jackie Robinson’s
greatest accomplishment during that
time of breaking the color barrier
in baseball.
In Math classes, students learned
to calculate simple interest:
P x R x T = Interest
Students in
Spanish class
learned
numbers and
to tell time in
Spanish.
They also
learned that
the concept of
Time is much
more relaxed
in Latino
cultures.
The Adventurers learned many
aspects of time as it related to
science.
They timed pendulum experiments, counted
swings per time period, and placed pendulums
on a number line that showed that shorter
pendulums had more swings per time period
than did the longer pendulums.
Science students watched Bill Nye’s Time to discuss how
clocks were made—from sundials to Geologic Time Scale.
From the billions of years from the beginning of
the Earth, they subdivided into Epochs, Eras, Eons,
and Periods, to better understand the huge
amount of time in smaller chunks, based on
major events, such as Extinction.
Science students made a timeline that represented
4.5 billion years. They made a model of Geologic
Time and compared it to the calendar year. Most of
the year was Pre-Cambrian. They learned how
recently organisms began to appear.
They compared the
concept of Geologic Time
to a 24 hour day clock.
They also watched The
Story of the Earth, which
showed major events on
Earth.
They learned that Man came into
existence in the last 30 seconds
on New Year’s Eve.
In several classrooms
students learned that 21
days can seem like a
very long time!
The Dream Team worked on the
chronology of historic events and helped
students situate new events in relation to
those they had already studied.
In Social Studies they
compared the growth and
expansion for the time period
between 1790 and 1825.
Major events included:
Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, Robert
Fulton’s steam boat, the Monroe
Doctrine, and the opening of the
Erie Canal.
Abby Campbell and Mr. Bailey
assembled 4,256 reasons for
their Pete Rose Project.
Throughout the year, we took
the time to read and to count
the books we read!
Each week our numbers grew!
We celebrated Read Across America!
ELA classes studied the past, present, and
future through literature.
.
From WWII to
the Future!
And our book count grew LARGER!
Mrs. Wallin said…
And look
who made
