ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2013-14 SEASON
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Well, the season has finally begun, and now all of our focus’ can be directed to playing
cricket and enjoying our cricket.
Round 1 started with the threat of rain very real, and although it did rain and some games
were called off, we were lucky to have all of our matches played and completed. With 7 of
our 8 sides that play competitive cricket in action (10e’s had the bye),we managed to have
5 wins and 2 second places. This is a great result considering the weather had caused
havoc in the weeks prior to the comp starting and training was cut to a minimum. I’m sure
the results will get even better as the boys and girls get more training and match-play
under their belts.
Not only were there some fine team results, there was also a plethora of great first up
individual efforts. The 16s had Matt Thomas hit a 30, as did Declan Moroney in the second
dig and Jonah Herrmann bagged 3-15 and took 2 catches in their sides win. The 14C team
also won and saw Jarrod McRae score 36 and Tom Bryant bag the Club’s first 5 wicket
haul this year, 5-3 and score 27 with the bat. Sam Tompson took 2-11 and scored 10 runs
for the 14D side even though they went down in a tough first up game.
Luke Mecham scored 36 and Joe Gair 32*, with Hayden Lindsay taking 2-14 in the 12C
team’s victory.
The Tsoukarellis brothers were the standout performers for the 12E side despite going
down in a close encounter. John scored 15 and Anthony took 2-9. Both our 10B and 10D
teams registered wins. Cooper Sullivan took 4-1 and Aiden Rider scored 27* for the 10B
side, whilst Cameron Cullen and Jonah Smithson put on 24 runs and took 2-11 and 2-2
respectively for the 10D side.
Our mighty under 8 teams, White and Blue donned the creams for the first time (mostly)
and both sides played sensationally well for their first efforts. I witnessed some very good
bowling and some extremely creative and effective batting from our boys and girls. All the
kids seemed to enjoy themselves (as did the Mums and Dads) and I got plenty of match
reports from the kids on Monday morning at school. Seems like we’re going to have to
fast-track this bunch of youngsters straight into the Australian team if you can believe how
well some of them said they went.....you never know.
It was good to see that the season started off well, and that is because of the efforts of our
new Coaches and Managers. They have done a great job in getting the kids training and
playing and I’m sure as the season progresses, their efforts will be justly rewarded. The
smile on a kids face after they have been applauded for doing something good on the
sporting field is worth its weight in gold and does so much for their confidence and selfesteem.
So let’s all be positive and praise each of their own personal little triumphs. It goes a long
way to build them as good sports and good sportsmen and sportswomen. To those teams
that have been mucked around because of the delay in laying the new pitches, thank you
for your patience and hopefully you won’t be inconvenienced past round 1. I hope
everybody enjoys the holiday break and we all come back safe and healthy and looking
forward to round 2 and some more good hard fun cricket.
To our sponsors, thank you for your continued support. Anybody who wishes to become a
sponsor or knows of someone or a business that may like to help out, you are more than
welcome. Please get in contact with anybody on the Committee and we will get the ball
rolling...so to speak.
Until next round, keep safe.
Yours on a sticky wicket......still.

Numbers have increased this year to 100 which is great news and we will field 2 more
teams than last year. We will have the minimum numbers in some teams but I’m sure we
will still be very competitive in all grades. We will see the fruits of our recruitment drives in
future years in the 12s and 14s from the increase in 10s and 8s over the last 2 seasons.
FEES
There may still a few fees outstanding so if for any reason you have difficulties please let

These people will need all the assistance we can give them during the year as they are all
volunteers giving of their time.
You do not need any qualifications to be a manager or help with scoring but the Sutherland
Shire Junior Cricket Association requires that all club coaches from U10 to U16 have
attended a coaching accreditation course.
For level 1 this is a web based tutorial followed by a face to face course of a very intensive
2 nights. The accreditation is valid for 3 years and is renewed by the club. All costs of the
course are borne by the club.
PLAYING DRESS
The Club plays in a coloured shirt which commenced 5 seasons ago and these shirts are
available for sale at $25.00 ea. Every child must wear one to play. We also have club hats
at $15.00 The baggy caps have become an expensive item and are $45.00 all up so we
may need to take orders as we don’t stock too many.
Whites/creams are mandatory including jumpers or Sloppy Joes. Baseball caps are not
approved clothing. Runners must be predominately white.
Start thinking about what you might need and advise your coach during training.

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2013-14 SEASON
SPONSORSHIP
A general thank you to all our sponsors for 2013-14 season as without you we would not
be able to meet our cost commitments. Our wholehearted thanks go out to them and may
they support us for years to come. So get behind them for the good of our club.
Many years ago sponsorship was unheard of at our club but gradually over the last few
years we would never have met the rising costs of running the club without the
involvement of sponsors. It is hard for a club such as ours with limited membership and
playing numbers to offer our sponsors a great deal for their money. We only ask that you
the parents and the heart of our club support our sponsors wherever possible.
A club can’t run effectively without sponsorship and we are no different to any other club.
The Sponsor’s dollars go to renewing the kits and equipment that is necessary to give your
kids the best opportunity to play and train for cricket. So I offer our Sponsors a sincere
thank you for your support and hope you continue with us next season. These Sponsors
appear in our newsletter after each match, please support them as their dollars support
your kids.

MILO in2CRICKET
We will again be organising the program for youngsters interested in a skills development
program that runs as a separate program to the actual cricket competition. There wasn’t
enough support last year to run this but there is already some interest around so hopefully
we can do it this year.
Whilst we have organised games for U8’s and U10’s, some of our players in these age
groups also benefit greatly from the skills development that the program offers. We would
also urge players from 6yrs up to register in our U8 competition as we put the younger
members together and usually play against teams of similar age and ability.
The MILO in2Cricket sessions will commence tentatively Friday 17th October on
Boys Town oval near the nets and run for approx 10 weeks to near Xmas. The cost of
this has not been set by Cricket NSW yet but anticipated to be around $65. There will be
special promotional packs and giveaways for the participants and regular skills
development programs usually Friday afternoon but this is yet to be confirmed. Further
information will be available the closer we get to the start of the program but you can
register on the normal club registration day. More info can be obtained from the Cricket
NSW website www.in2CRICKET.com.au or our Coordinator Mark Piper. If you know of
anyone interested have them contact us.

CLUB COMMUNICATIONS
The clubs website is www.boscocricket.org.au. Please make a special of note of this
as it changed since the start of last season and you will need to change your
browser search. We keep this site up to date with all club information, contacts and
events that all members should be aware of. We welcome your comments and
suggestions on what should be contained there and hope we can develop it further as time
goes by. A full list of our sponsors can be seen there with relevant links to their websites
where supplied and we encourage you to visit these sites.
There is also the competition website which contains all the club registration details and
will provide access to all club members to view results and competition tables and team
statistics for both Juniors and Mens competitions. www.cricket-online.info. The coaches
and managers and committee have special access to team details and statistics but the
general public can access match results.
This is also used to send emails to families so it is important to supply your up to
date email contact details when you register. I wholeheartedly recommend the use of
this site as it provides everything you need to know about the season. It is essential that
you make yourself aware (coaches and managers especially) of the rules of the game and
the Administrative regulations. They are all downloadable from the website. The teams,
draw and results for the Men’s competition are also located on this website.
The Association’s web site is www.ssjca.com.au

Menai 2 10/62 (Thomas 5/3, Addison 2/6, Elliot 1/4, Jarrod 1/7, Jack 1/9)
Round 1. Day 1. Loss the toss and were made to bat first. Started the season very
enthusiastically. Ryan and Pat opened the batting and settled well before Ryan was
eventually caught out for 8 and Patrick likewise on a handy 27. These guys were both well
supported by Tom (not out 11) and Elliot caught mid wicket for 10. Dave and Tom to open
next week allowing our absent players, Taylor and Aiden, to have a bat next week.
In the fielding department, the boys were all very vocal and upbeat and had the opposition
at 6/31 after 24 overs. Great bowling figures by all concerned with Tom finishing best with
4 wickets. Other wickets included Addi, Jack and Jarrad. Well done all. Round 1.
Day 2. Started strongly again in the fielding. An early wicket to Elliot got the ball rolling
with a cracker at speed firing off the bails into the field. Tom Bryant followed with a superb
over and the first `five fa` for the Club. The ball has been saved for a trophy at the end of
the season Tom, well done. That really set the tone for our fielding which was great also.
Wickets to Ads, Jarrod and Jack also.
You can definitely see the improvement in all aspects of fielding this season with everyone
on their toes and walking toward the batsman each ball. Our batting has also improved
with the boys defending their wickets with straight bats and moving feet in defense. Jarrod
was exceptional with this and it paid off with his highest score of 36 n.o. Great batting also
by Tom, Pat, Taylor and Ell all getting double figures.
A great team effort by all this week, lets hope we can take this enthusiasm and give
Engadine Dragons a run for their money next Saturday.
14D v Gymea Bay 3
Bosco 2* 67 (Samuel 10) & 0/16 lost to Gymea Bay 3 7/203 (Samuel 2/11, Harrison 2/17,
George 1/9, Matthew 1/15)
Firstly welcome to all new and returning players. This year the 14D team is made up of 6
returning players from last year’s 12E team and 5 new players who are playing their first
year of competition cricket. With this in mind I think we did ok in our first game. What has
been pleasing to Michael and I is the dedication shown by you all at training. If we continue
with this work ethic and effort at training we will see better results in the future.
We found Gymea to be a very good team. Michael must have realised this by bunging on a
sickie on the second week. Thanks to Joe for some quick thinking organising me to pick up
10
ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2013-14 SEASON
the kit before I had left Heathcote. Our batting let us down in the first innings with too many
shots hit into the air which seem to always find a Gymea fielder. Great catch to Harrison
subbing for the other team and catching potentially our best batsmen Zane. After this
game I recon Michael might think twice about helping out with lending a couple of our
fielders.
When we focused and put our heads down we prooved that we will be able to bat for long
periods without losing wickets. This was evident in our second innings. Well done to Alex,
who only learned how to hold the bat correctly last Monday at training. Alex ended up not
out in the first innings and 3 not out in the second innings. Just goes to show what you can
do if you play with a little determination and courage. Well done to Harrison also who
looked very solid in both innings.
Unfortunately our fielding was disappointing. We do not show enough urgency. When you
are not walking in with the bowler you are not applying any pressure to the batsmen by
allowing too many easy runs. We must all improve in this area if we want to get better
results in the future.
Just a point of note today, we need to learn to celebrate each others success. When we
take a wicket lets all run in and pat each other on the back. Good solid appealing could
also improve. See you all at training. Good luck next week and remember always keep
your heads up and have fun.
From your manager. Stuart
12C v Caringbah 4
Bosco 1* 4/154 (Luke M 36, Joseph 32no, Hayden 18no, Jake 18no) beat Caringbah 4
6/125 (Hayden 2/14, Luke 1/10, Benjamin 1/11, Lachlan 1/20)
What a great way to start off the year with an excellent win over Caringbah.
Our team put in a fantastic batting performance in the 1st innings with Jake and Luke
Mecham paving the way. Caleb was unlucky to be run-out on the first ball without facing a
delivery. Both Jake and Luke showed excellent skill to keep out some good full fast paced
bowling on a wet and slippery wicket. Jake showed us what a valuable addition he is to our
side this year. We ended with an excellent first day score of 1/50.
Our bowling was generally a bit wayward in the 2nd innings with Patrick being the pick of
our bowlers with some sharp fast bowling. Caleb showed us his great skill at wicket
keeping throughout both our bowling innings by letting by very few keeper byes and taking
a great catch in the second innings. Lachlan took our only wicket on the first day with a
great delivery.
The second day saw a huge improvement in our bowling accuracy and our figures showed
it. We took 5 wickets all together. Luke Mecham took a great catch at mid-wicket and
Hayden got 2 lbw’s. Joseph really impressed with his bowling performance on his very first
game of cricket. Ben showed a huge improvement in the field and Joel was ever reliable.
Luke Morris showed his valuable consistency with the ball and always backed up the
stumps. Kyan’s bowling was fast and accurate as usual.
Our second go at batting saw an amazing performance from Joe with he and Hayden
grinding out the win with the bat. Joe ended up with 32 not out by playing a sensible
innings, only choosing to go after the loose deliveries. How many games have you played
again Joe? Our man of the match was Jake for his spirited batting performance in tough
conditions and putting his body on the line when he copped a ball in the nose while fielding
at slips.
What a season this can be with such a talented team. Coach Mark

ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB 2013-14 SEASON
12E v Illawong Menai 1
Bosco 2* 6/92 (John 15, Michael 12) lost to Illawong Menai 1 6/139 (Anthony 2/9, John
1/4, Matthew 1/17)
Round 1 saw us take on the Illawong team. We are basically a brand new team with some
players who had never played the game before, while a number of the team showed some
real cricketing skill. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat on day 1.....Our answer to the
Waugh brothers, Anthony and John, led us out and set a blistering pace, with John
cracking a massive 4 in the first couple of overs.
The brothers stayed together for 3 overs, before Michael came in to hold up an end for
John, and the two of them batted through the bulk of the first day, dishing out some great
cricket shots. After John was out, HAYDEN strode out to the crease and commenced a
steady pairing with Michael that took us to the end of batting on day one.
When we took the field it was time to sit back and watch our star keeper, Steve, attack
everything that passed the bat, he got hit in the head, body and gloves over and over but,
didn`t let anything past. Everyone stepped up to have a bowl and all contributed to holding
Illawong to a great score of 54. Anthony backed up his opening bat with 2 wickets, while
both John and Mathew contributed with one wicket each.
Day 2 saw us take up in the field with both Mathew and Darcy stepping in behind the
stumps to stop anything that come past the bat, both boys did a brilliant job. Illawong come
out firing and played some really good cricket shots, to post a big total of 139. Wickets
were hard to come by, but everyone kept running in and bowled well. Michael put his body
on the line to stop a ball that was cracked off the bat.
He then returned to the crease with Hayden and the boys added 15 runs before Michael
was caught by a great catch. Mathew, Hayden, and Kye all became victims of some classy
Illawong catching. Max and Gabby took us to the end of the game, and were able to stay
not out.
All in all I was very impressed with the team and the spirit of the game. Welcome to Darcy
and Harry, who both didn`t get a chance to bat, but have shown plenty of promise for
round 2 and will be guaranteed of a bit more cricket in the next game. Great work
everyone....Special thanks to Jason, for scoring throughout the entire match.
10B v Caringbah 2
Bosco 1 5/125 (Aidan 27no, Cameron 11, Mark 10) beat Caringbah 2* 8(All)/79 (Cooper
4/1, Benjamin 2/7, Mark 1/4)
Our first game of the season and we had a great first up win. The score book showed a
convincing win to us; however, we had to work hard for the win. Most impressive was that
everyone contributed to the win and it was real team effort and it was clear that all
everyone enjoyed themselves out there. It was pleasing to see everyone work for each
other in the field.
Everyone was trying to back up the stumps and get down on their knee when fielding to
stop the ball. We practiced this at training and it showed on the field. We were better in the
field than Caringbah and our fielding contributed to the win. In addition, it was great to see
a couple of great catches taken by Assen (with a split finger), Aiden, and a good run out by
Brock. Keep up the good work with the fielding it will pay off and will win us a few games.
Aiden, Mark, Cam, Brock and Dom all batted well and were really solid out there. It looked
like they could have batted for the innings. It was just a few silly shots that got them out.
Special mention to Aiden who scored a great 27 not out. Aiden batted super and never
12

looked like getting out. He hit a couple of great fours, scored his runs quickly and really
pushed us ahead on the scorebook. Well done Aiden, great innings.
Everyone bowled really well and a few of us were unlucky not to take wickets. I could see
a difference in the bowling from the first week to the second week of the game with a clear
improvement in the second week. Cooper, Ben, and Mark all took wickets with Cooper
taking 4 wickets for 1 run in a great spell of bowling and Ben taking 2 and Mark chipping in
with 1 wicket. Well done boys on the wickets and well done Cooper on the great figures of
4 for 1. Dom and Nathan were unlucky not to take wickets, only just missing the stumps a
few times.
Well done on the win boys, keep up the good work and keep practising at home and
working on the things we are doing at training. Lots of improvement to come. Special
thanks to Melinda McNaughton for the great job of scoring the game. Hopefully a few of
the other mums and dads can help her out. Melinda is only too happy to show other mums
and dads how to score so she can get a break.
10D v Gymea Bay 3
Bosco 2* 6 for 86 (Cameron 16no) beat Gymea Bay 3 7 for 74 (Jonah 2/2, Cameron 2/11,
Matthew 1/8, Lachlan 1/11, Zachariah 1/12)
A great first round result for the mighty Bosco 10D's. We are pleased to welcome our new
recruits Archie, Cameron and Joshua who all blended in and played well.
Dylan and Zac started our Innings with a great net score of 18. Both were calling their YES
or NO loudly building on their pairing from last season. Next to the crease were Matt and
Lachlan who gave a wry grin to each other as they looked around at the fielding positions.
Both continued their great form as they moved our score along by another quality 20 runs.
To finish our strong week 1 batting, Ryan and Archie strode to the crease, both looking to
the sky and commenting on the weather closing in and thinking it may affect the ball
coming on to the bat but they turned over quick singles for a respectable 12 runs.
Now it was Gymea’s turn to bat. Our boys marched onto the field, took their positions and
gave each other a positive nod. It was time to defend our great 50 run first day score for
the loss of only 2 wickets. The weather that Ryan and Archie earlier predicted finally
arrived, a slow cold drizzle. Anyone would think we were playing in England! All the boys
bowled well with Jonah finishing the day with 2 for 2. The end of the first innings saw both
teams equal on 50 runs.
Week 2 saw Gymea continue their batting and our boys continuing with the great bowling.
Today saw Zac, Matt and Lachlan take excellent wickets while Cameron ran in Mitchell
Johnson style keeping the ball on line to take two well-deserved clean bowled wickets.
Gymea finished their batting with a respectable 74 runs.
It was our turn to bat again and as Cameron and Jonah strode to the crease, the rest of
the team started to chant “Let’s go Bosco, let’s go”. Cameron took strike and after a couple
of balls to get his eye in, smacked a difficult ball for four runs, the first of three four’s. This
was followed by some smart batting between Cameron and Jonah who between them
scored a cool 24 runs.
To finish week 2 it was up to Joshua and Makai to take us to a win. Joshua took a quick
single in their first over and batted well throughout his overs while Makai picked up where
he left off last season with a great technique, never looking like getting out. They did it! Our
last pair ensuring a great first up win by 12 runs.
Well done to all the boys. Todd

8 White v St Patricks 2
Bosco 1 0 for 46 (Zach 12no) beat St Patricks 2* 2 for 36 (Leny 1/5, Kyanne 1/5) on Forfeit
The first round for the Under 8 Golds was all about getting to know each other, wearing
keeper gloves that are way too big, and running in style (?) with pads on. This was
especially true for our rookies this year, Erin, Ruby and Zach.
While the game ended up being a forfeit due to St Pats being short the second day, we
played in the spirit of the game, and even stood in the field for the opposition to make sure
we all got a turn of learning this great game.
Lenny and Zach, congratulations on your great partnership of 0/30. Ruby what an amazing
result to get your first wicket in your first ever game. Erin and Kyanne, congrats on your
impressive bowling stats of 0/11 and 1/5 respectively. Max your bowling is getting better
each and every week, all that practice with dad is making the difference. Finally Ethan,
great wicket keeping this week.
Well done everyone, including the coach and scorer! Looking forward to next game.

8 Gold v Como Jannali 2
Bosco 2 8 for 46 (Chase 12no) lost to Como Jannali 2* 8 for 95 (Jasper 3/10, Harrison
2/15, Tate 2/17, Luke 1/16)
After all the bad weather the sun was shining for our first day of cricket. We played Como
who looked impressive in their baggy caps. Como were sent into bat and the boys rolled
their arms over. There was impressive stump to stump bowling by Jasper and good first
ball wicket to Luke Edgar. The first twelve overs flew by and then the boys had a bat. It
was a good hit out for first timers. Just as we finished the heavens opened.
We all came back next weekend and Como batted first. Luke B bowled well picking up 3
wickets. Chase hit a few nice fours to keep the score ticking over as Bosco chased a first
up victory.
The result finished with a Como win. It was a great effort by the boys who were all playing
their first match. We are all looking forward to the next game.
