2015-2016 Physical Conditioning Syllabus
Course Description:
This course is designed to teach nutritional value, fitness concepts and conditioning techniques that can
be used on a day to day basis. Students will experience weight training, cardiovascular endurance,
flexibility and core activities throughout the semester. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of
strength training, muscular endurance, aerobic training and overall fitness training and conditioning.
Course work will include lecture sessions, videos, projects, assessments and daily activity sessions. This
course is designed to empower students to work together, meet challenges, and develop positive
behaviors in fitness, wellness and movement for a lifetime.
Course Goals:
The student will:






Understand and appreciate the importance of a healthy lifestyle through cardiovascular
endurance and muscular activity.
Understand the importance of technique and weight training safety.
Value the importance of warm-up and cooling down when implementing physical activity in
their daily lives.
Learn the difference between dynamic and static stretching and why it is important to physical
fitness.
Focus on improving technique, coordination, endurance, strength and running.
Be able to design a fitness plan that will incorporate a healthy daily lifestyle, weekly exercises
and personal fitness goals.

1. PEHS.1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a
variety of physical activities.
2. PEHS.2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics
as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Materials Needed:







3 ring Notebook
Paper
Pen (blue or black in only) and/or Pencil
Colored Pencils/Markers
Dividers
Proper “dress out” clothes (sportswear/athletic shoes)
Other materials as deemed appropriate by the teacher
Student Expectations:










Report to class ON TIME with all materials needed each and every day.
Students are to remain alert and attentive at all times. No sleeping/placing head down on desk
during activities and/or the instructional period.
Participate daily in all physical activities to receive full credit each week.
COMPLETE ALL activities and testing accordingly in order to receive full credit for this class
Demonstrate APPROPRIATE class behavior by following classroom rules.
Absolutely NO CELL PHONES are to be brought to the class/weight room at any time.
Students are not allowed to eat or drink in the classroom or in the gym.
Students should not attempt lifting movements until the instructor is present (Weight Room,
Free-Weights and etc.)
Horseplay/Disruption of any kind is strictly prohibited. Any student guilty of
horseplay/Disruption is subject to a detention and/or referral to administration.
Students are expected to adhere to the code of conduct, put forth 100% effort in all academic
work, participate in fitness activities, and seek assistance from the teacher when needed.
Intimidation and/or Bullying will not be tolerated! Any student found to be involved in
intimidating or bullying another student will immediately be discipline BOE/Sol. C. Johnson High
School Policy and will be automatically removed from class.
Grading:
The following grading scales will be used to report student achievement:
90-100 = A
80-89 =B

70-79 = C
0-69 = F (Reference State BOE Policy 160-4-2.13 Statewide passing score)
Teachers will calculate the grades for each of the following components to determine a numerical
grade:
Daily grades will constitute 40% of each student’s grade.
Student assessment activities will constitute 60% of each student’s grade.

Fitness Pre-Test:
All students who participate in a Health or Physical Education class must complete a fitness pre-test.
Each student will complete the FitnessGram during the first two weeks of the semester. The
FitnessGram is composed of the following exercises: Pacer Run, Sit and Reach, Pull-Ups, Curl Ups and
Push-ups. Students will also measure their height and weight.
Dressing Out/Participation:







Every week, students will receive a “dress out” and “participation” grade.
Each day that the student “dresses out” and participates in daily PHYSICAL activities they will
receive 20 points (10 points for “dressing out” and 10 points for participating in the physical
activity).
Each week the student will attempt 100 points for “dressing out” and participating in class (20
points a day, 5 days a week= 100% daily grade each week).
Not participating throughout the ENTIRE physical activity may result in loss of all daily points.
If a student is absent and it is an unexcused absence, the student will receive 0 points for the
day.
Students must have a written letter from a parent/guardian or doctor to be considered an
excused absence.
If a student cannot participate because of illness or injury, doctor note must be submitted to the
instructor. If the injury is over 3 days long, a parent/guardian must MEET with the instructor.

“Dress Out” attire should be athletic loose fitting clothes. “Dress Out” clothes must be
sportswear (active shirts/NO TANKS, basketball shorts/athletic shorts; NO JEANS OR JEAN
SHORTS, tennis shoes/NO HARD BOTTOM DRESS SHOES, ATHLETIC SLIDES OR SLIPPERS.)
“Dress Out” attire that is inappropriate will result in the student loosing points (all shorts should
be an appropriate length, shirts should not be low cut and the midriff should not show and all
pants/shorts should be worn appropriately and not below the buttocks). *NOTE: THE
INSTRUCTOR HAS THE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHAT IS INAPPROPRIATE AND/OR INAPPROPRIATE FOR
THEIR CLASS AS LONG AS THE DECISION IS FAIR AND ETHICAL.
Notebook Check:
Each student is required to have a 3 ring binder/notebook. Inside of the notebook, the student should
have a cover page, their syllabus for the course, a copy of their student parent agreement form, copy of
their FitnessGram and a divider for the following sections: Warm-up, Notes, Class Assignments, Group
Assignments and Test/Assessments. Notebook checks will be given on Mondays. Notebook checks will
be given in the following order: 3rd week of the beginning of the semester (fall semester-August 24,
2015; spring semester-January 25, 2016), beginning of 2nd 9 weeks (fall semester-October 13th, 2015;
spring semester-TBA), before the end of the semester (fall semester-December 7th, 2015; spring
semester-TBA). The following rubric will be used to for all notebook checks:

Design a Fitness Plan (Final Exam/Project)
Purpose: Each student will design a personal fitness plan as their final exam grade for Physical
Conditioning. Each component of the personal fitness plan is derived from each component that each
student learned during Physical Conditioning. The goal of this plan is to ensure that students
understand the components of fitness that they learned during Physical Conditioning. Students may use
a variety of resources to create their plan. Students are encouraged to refer to all notes, PowerPoint
handouts and lectures that they received throughout the semester. The project will be graded on the
following components: a cover page, table of content, personal fitness plan, fitness calendar, conclusion
and creativity.

Student Parent Agreement
My child and I have read and discussed the information by the contained in my Physical Conditioning
class syllabus and understand that it is my child’s responsibility and obligation to follow these basic
rules, procedures and expectations in order to succeed in his/her Physical Conditioning class. As a
parent, or guardian, I will encourage my son/daughter to follow the rules, procedures, and
expectations. I will support the teacher’s and school’s action in the event that my child does not
follow the rules.
