7. Online course evaluation

Central European University uses an online system, CoursEval, for course and teacher evaluations. Students are asked to evaluate their courses at the end of each semester through a survey of 14 questions. The CoursEval system is entirely independent of all other university systems. It is managed solely by the Institutional Research Office at the Office of the Provost. All surveys are anonymous; neither the numeric nor the text answers can be linked to the individual respondents. Faculty members receive a report on their evaluations after they have uploaded all the grades to Infosys, they do not have access to the names of individual students. CoursEval student evaluations serve as one important source of feedback for both teachers and Departments, and are components of curriculum development at the University and individual Departments. CoursEval reports are studied by the departments and the Office of the Provost in order to respond to student needs and observations effectively.

However, the most important avenue for feedback in an academic environment is still direct communication and dialogue. All faculty will be happy to discuss and explain issues you have concerning the courses and other aspects of teaching. Talk to your MA director with any comments you may have on the program.

8. Grants

Conference travel grant : MA and PhD students can apply for a conference travel grant which is covered by the central CEU budget. You can only apply before the conference.

You can find the application form on the main CEU website with the guidelines. The responsible for grants at the Finance Office is Nora Kovacs ( kovacsnora@ceu.edu

9. Regular attendance

One can miss one class per course without special permission but there might be special rules for some courses. Please always notify the professor and ask him or her if you are planning to miss a class. In case of a longer absence (conference, medical reason, etc.), please let the department head know by email ( dafingera@ceu.edu

) and notify Kata as well

( NadasKata@ceu.edu

).

10. Required credits

You need to follow the study plan described in the MA and PhD handbooks and in the curriculum but some minor changes may be possible. Please keep in mind that you need to have all the required credits at the end of the academic year and pass all the mandatory courses, the distribution of the elective credits between the fall and the winter term is more flexible.

Students may take courses other than those listed in the curriculum (courses from other departments which are not crosslisted). They will count up to 2 credits of elective courses in fulfilling the requirements. Please always turn to the MA program director for permission if you want to take a non-crosslisted course from other departments.

Required credits in the 1 year MA program: 42 credits, 34 course credits + 8 credits for the thesis

Required credits in the 2 year MA program: 62 credits, 48 course credits (30 credits in the first year and 18 credits in the second year) + 14 credits for the thesis

Required credits in the PhD program: 58 course credits (22 credits in the first year, 20 credits in the second year, 16 credits in the third year). Please note that you need to register

4

to courses even while being on fieldwork to have all the required credits at the end of the third year. Course registration is mandatory during the stop the clock period as well.

11. Research proposal defense of the 1 st year students in the 2 year MA program:

The purpose of the MA Research Proposal is to expound and explain in broad terms the relevance as well as the feasibility of the proposed research. Proposals are to be prepared during the Proposal Writing Workshop (May) and submitted to the department coordinator by June 1. The Research Proposal defenses of the first-year students take place in the same period as the MA Thesis defenses. The committee will consist of the supervisor and the second reader and their acceptance of the research proposal (Pass/Fail) is a condition for continuing studies. They will also indicate specific research tasks for the summer break at this point.

12. Research break and thesis writing for MA students:

1 year MA program: The research break is in April when you can go on fieldwork.

2 year MA program: The whole spring term of the 2 nd

year need to be dedicated to the research. Please note that those 2 nd

year MA students who leave in the Dormitory need to empty their rooms for the time of the research leave and put all their belongings into the storage room of the Dormitory.

The thesis writing period starts in May. MA students both in the 1 year and 2 year programs need to be back from the field by the beginning of May to start the thesis writing and to attend the thesis writing workshops.

13. MA thesis defense:

There is indeed no need to prepare a formal power-point-style presentation as some departments expect, the defense opens with the candidate's 5-7 minute introduction. This brief introduction is not a repetition of the thesis but a recapping of the thesis, its context and main ideas, a reflection on what the candidate would do different given more time and resources. It is not a "lecture" and should really not take up much of the discussion time.

The defense is an oral exam in front of a committee composed of the supervisor and the second reader. It is usually 30 minutes long but may take up to 50 minutes. The written comments of the committee members become available after the defense. The questions included in the evaluation are usually asked during the defense.

14. Student Union

The CEU Student Union (SU) is the self-government of all students enrolled at CEU.

Every year the students of various programs elect their representatives to the SU Assembly

(SUA). The Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the SU and it provides representation in matters of academic, administrative and/or disciplinary nature. Nine members of the Assembly are elected by the SUA to be the SU Board (SUB), which is the main decision-making body between Assembly meetings and is the key executive body of the Union.

Students elect 2 representatives from each program . Representatives are not elected per year but per program.

In the case of 1-year MA programs, this means 2 representatives;

In the case of 2-year MA programs, this means 2 representatives; and

In the case of doctoral programs, this means 2 representatives (representatives may be in any year of their Doctoral program)

The departmental elections take place between September 14 and 25, 2015.

The first Student Union Assembly meeting will take place on the 1st of October, 2015.

15. Seminar Series

The Seminar Series has a dedicated slot on Mondays at 17:20 throughout the whole academic year but it does not take place every Monday. The program is announced at the beginning of each semester. The attendance is mandatory for all MA students, one can miss at maximum two talks per year to be able to pass the course. Your participation will be registered based on an attendance sheet.

16. Leaving procedure:

At the end of their program, each student is required to go through the so-called 'Leaving

Procedure' which includes the following:

1.

fill out the on-line graduation form

2.

complete the leaving procedure. Students initiate the Leaving Procedure process after submitting their thesis at their department. Please do not wait until the last moment and allow at least three working days for completing this process. Graduating students are required to ensure that:

1.

they have returned all borrowed materials to their departments,

6

2.

they have given back their locker keys and official residency documents (non-Hungarian

EU citizens) to Students Life,

3.

that they do not have any library items in their possession,

4.

that they do not have any outstanding financial issues.

17. ETD:

For fulfilment of graduate degree requirements, theses and dissertations must also be submitted in electronic format utilizing the Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Guide. Theses and dissertation stored in the ETD collection will be made available on the

Web through the Library catalogue in full compliance with pertinent copyright laws.

Information about ETD publishing is available in the CEU Thesis Writing and ETD

Submission Guidelines.

The Computer and Statistics Center offers 1 hour long elective ETD training sessions on formatting and uploading process in May and June since it is essential to have proper MS

Word document formatting and PDF conversion settings to be able to upload your thesis to the ETD collection.

The University may - as an exception - decide not to publish in electronic form a master's thesis or a doctoral dissertation for a period not exceeding two academic years - or not to publish such thesis in integral, rather in a redacted form if (1) there are well documented and convincing reasons to believe that such publication would actually or potentially result in threatening the life, health or well-being of the author or another individual or (2) if the author proves to the satisfaction of the Provost that publishing the master's thesis or the doctoral dissertation in electronic form by the University would prevent its publication with a leading academic publisher. Redaction shall be preferred in the first of the above two cases over non-publication. The author of the thesis or dissertation shall submit a written application for non-publication or redaction to the Provost, setting out reasons for the above. The Provost shall decide on the question of the (non-)publication/redaction based on a written recommendation of the thesis supervisor and of the doctoral committee in case of doctoral dissertations.

Detailed information on how to create and upload a PDF to the ETD collection is available in the ETD Guidelines of the Computer and Statistics Center’s webpage: http://www.personal.ceu.edu/comp/thesis.htm

18. Wireless connection in Zrinyi 14

The wifi password in the Zrinyi building is zrinyi14access.

Wifi access is for use outside the classroom. It is bad practice to check email, or any other online resources during teaching time. In some courses use of computers may be discouraged altogether.
