WORLD SPACE WEEK 2015 October 7-9, 2015 Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan This document outlines the general rules & regulations and registration requirements to participate in world space activities in 2015 at Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. 1.1 Theme The theme for 2015, (http://www.worldspaceweek.org/) is “Discovery” World Space Week 2015 celebrates the exciting discoveries in space, teaching us a lot about our origins and our future. WSW 2015 highlights the great era of deep space discovery that we are in. We have never learnt as much of the universe we live in as in the last decade. Space telescopes, deep space probes and several interplanetary satellites and landers have shown us the magic, wonders and opportunities of new worlds. Exoplanets, galaxies far away and close by and landings on planets, moons, asteroids and comets teach us about where we humans have come from and where we will go in the future. Space is all about Discovery! We are certain that this exciting new theme will be a source of inspiration for our World Space Week events in 2015. 1.2. Events and Program The year 2015 is augmented with several new events in order to create the awareness among the students, teachers and general masses about the peaceful uses of space science, technology and applications especially under the umbrella of WSW-2015 theme, “Discovery”. The scheduled Program is attached. Note: IST reserves the rights to change dates /time/venue of the competitions without any prior notice. General Rules and Regulations Decision of the respected judges will be final and cannot be challenged. Themes/ Medium/ Titles and time limits will be followed strictly. Use of indecent language, derogatory remarks (whether direct or implied) about important personalities, national leaders, political parties, government agencies, religion/ sect, teachers can lead to disqualification. Any team found involved in any type of cheating (PDAs, Palm-tops, cell-phones etc.) will be disqualified with immediate effect. Participants of all competitions are required to be present at the stated venue/hall 15 minutes before the time as mentioned in the program. Host will assign performance slots to the participants. 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes shall be awarded for each category of the competition but only ONE prize will be given if the contestants are less than 5 (five) in any competition. All the prize winners and participants will get the achievement certificates too. All the participant students and participating schools will get the participation certificates. Any institute’s pictures/ artwork/ video exhibiting vulgarity, racism, religious discrimination or any other offense will be disqualified. All routines, music, choreography and costumes must be suitable for family viewing. IST reserves the right to deduct points, disallow or disqualify any act for any reason, including those considered unpleasant or vulgar. All participants are expected to act graciously during their stay at IST and interact with other participants, officials and judges respectfully. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from the event. Participants must not attempt to manipulate the rules and regulations to their advantage. The use of tobacco or any other drug at IST premises is strictly prohibited. Distracting or interfering with any competitor, any official, judges or organizers can lead to disqualification. Decision of judges and IST shall be final and unchallengeable. However, in case of any dispute, Deputy Director, Department of Student Affairs (IST) being the arbitrator, the verdict given by the arbitrator shall be final and binding on all the participants. Each school/college will be allotted 15 points for first position, 10 points for the second position and 7 points for the third position for each competition. At the end of all competitions, the team scoring maximum points in all competitions will be declared as the “Overall Champion of World Space Week 2015”. Participation is free in all the events except Space School. Accommodation, Meals, Transport and TA/DA will NOT be furnished by IST. This section should be read in conjunction with section 1 as general rules and regulations applied to all these events mentioned in this section. 2.1. Space Knowledge Competitions 2.1.1. Each participant has to submit four copies of Ghazal/Nazm at least one hour before the event. 2.2 Space Innovation 2.2.1. Colonizing Space Theme The Request for Proposal (RFP) for Andromeda will be developed to propose the design, development, construction and operations planning for the first settlement on the surface of Mars. 8 hrs. A CEO (student) from IST will be assigned to each company who will assist and lead them c. Participants will bring their own laptops d. The companies will prepare designs in the given time and submit their proposal e. The companies will be given 15 minutes to present their proposal before the jury members f. The most appealing and convincing proposal will be declared as the winning company Note : While selecting members for your company, keep in mind that you’ll need people who can cover the following areas: a. Aero Modeling Theme Each team will be provided with a beginner’s level model airplane kit that they will have to assemble within allocated time. 4 hrs. An introductory training session will be held at the start of competition in which students would be given demonstration of assembling b. Glider Flying Theme Participants will have to design and build a rubber band-powered model airplane predominantly out of balsa wood which they will have to assemble within allocated time. 4 hrs. An introductory training session will be held at the start of competition in which students would be given demonstration of assembling b. IST students will help and guide the participants during the design build and fly. Limited entries are available and the teams will be registered on first come first serve basis. 2.4.3. Water Rocket Theme Each team will be provided with the material to make, assemble and launch Water Rockets within allocated time. 4 hrs. Time Team 2 Members Category Seniors : Class/Grade : 9-12 , O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) Instructions a. IST students will help and guide the participants during the design and launch. b. During the competition, each team will be given opportunity to conduct two launches. The result of the best launch will be recorded. c. Launcher will be provided by IST. d. The launches will be judged on the basis of design and creativity of the nose cones and fins. Limited entries are available and the teams will be registered on first come first serve basis. 2.4.4 Space Models Theme The students will bring self-designed models on the theme “Discovery” which will be displayed at IST. Time Models will be displayed for all three days Team 4 Members Category Juniors: Class/Grade: 6 - 8 Ages: ( 11 – 13) Seniors : Class/Grade : 9 - 12 – O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) Instructions a. Any institute participating in the exhibition will be limited to displaying one model b. Display space is limited. IST will only provide one table and two chairs c. Exhibitors are responsible for the safety and security of their displayed Models while IST will do its best to protect the displayed items; it assumes no liability for any damage and/or loss that may occur d. Items that may contain components from proscribed (illegal) types cannot be entered in IST. The host will provide drawing sheets only and it will be an on-spot event b. Participants must bring their own paints, brushes, and painting material c. The paintings will be judged on the basis of innovation, originality, color combinations, visual appeal and relevance to the theme d. The host will provide drawing sheets only and it will be an on-spot event b. No more than 3 ayahs can be portrayed c. Participants should use known Arabic calligraphic scripts (e.g. Nastaleeq, Thuluth, Naskh, Kufic, Ruqa’h, etc.) for their artwork d. The Calligraphic scripts must display uniformity, proportionality and consistency of lettering in accordance with the original Quranic text e. Graffiti will be done on wall provided by the host and it will be an on-spot event b. The participants should bring their Spray paints and other required material c. Work should be original and in accordance with the theme 2.5.5. Space Cartoon Theme “Discovery” 3 hrs. Time Team 1 Member Category Seniors : Class/Grade : 9-12 – O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) Instructions a. The host will provide drawing sheets only and it will be an on-spot event b. The participants should bring their own material c. The artwork will remain the property of IST 2.5.6. Space Masks Theme “Discovery / Space” Time 2 Hours Team 2 Members Category Seniors : Class/Grade : 9-12 , O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) Instructions a. The host will provide card paper and rubber bands only and it will be an on-spot event b. The participants should bring their own coloring material c. The artwork will remain the property of IST 2.5.7. Space Model Making (On-Spot) Theme The students will make space models on-spot on the theme “Discovery” which will be displayed at IST. Space Visual Arts 2.6.1. Space Videography Theme Time Team Category Instructions “Discovery” 5-6 minutes One entry per institution Seniors : Class/Grade : 9-12 – O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) a. The short film/documentary can be a collection from internet but according to theme and referenced properly b. The videos will be played on multimedia through computer; therefore, they must be formatted on CD’s / USB. No VHS recording will be entertained c. The students must bring an additional copy of their work d. The participants must bring a copy of their work (CD/ DVD) at least one day before the competition in order to screen test the documentary/ short film Limited entries are available and the teams will be registered on first come first serve basis. 2.6.2. Space Photography Theme “Discovery” Time Will be displayed all three days Team 1 member (for each category) Category Juniors: Class/Grade: 5- 8 Instructions Space Timeline (Prepared) Ages: ( 10 – 13) a. Participant is required to depict a single discovery by using just the medium of photography b. Each timeline may contain maximum of 5 photos along with name/title of the timeline only c. The work should be self-explanatory and words can be used to explain d. Size: 6×8 inches (Untreated; without frames but mounted on the black sheet) e. The artwork will remain the property of IST Space Scientists (Prepared) a. Participants will submit a total of 5 pictures of space scientists along with his/her contribution b. Size: 6×8 inches (Untreated; without frames but mounted on the black sheet) c. The artwork will remain the property of IST 2.6.3. The participants will have to hand over the PSDs (Photoshop files) to the Event heads at the end g. A theme for the Stamp will be provided on the spot c. Participants will NOT be allowed to bring along any pre-made stuff d. Internet facility will be provided e. Allowed Softwares are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Corel draw, MS Paint f. The participants will have to hand over the PSDs (Photoshop files) to the Event heads at the end g. In the case of a Computer/Monitor malfunction, the Game will be restarted from the beginning b. No Warm-Up Games may be played c. This event will be executed on a web based application b. At start, the students will log into the application using their registration numbers c. The students will click on any object (planet, moon or sun) and a window will pop up, containing a mathematical question d. The student will have a limited time to solve that question, the solution of which will contain a code e. This code when typed in its required place will add that object (planet, moon or sun) to their list of territories f. At the end of the allotted event time, student with the most territory will be the winner g. No question will be repeated h. Students can contest each other’s territories by solving a question and entering the code in lesser time than their opponents i. The teams will be evaluated based on their territory area at the end of event Limited entries are available and the teams will be registered on first come first serve basis. 2.8.2. Space Mathematical Hunt Theme Mathematical Hunt is a type of treasure hunt 2 hrs. Time Team 2 Members Category Seniors : Class/Grade : 9-12 , O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) Instructions a. Questions based on mathematics are given to teams at the starting point, and from there on each question’s answer leads to a specified location. b. The team that solves the most of questions in minimum time will win c. The teams will be evaluated based on their solutions and the time in which they returned d. Space Mathometer Theme Mathometer is a mathematical event consisting of a specified number of teams who will compete in pre-determined number of rounds 3 hrs. Time Team 2 Members Category Seniors : Class/Grade : 9-12 , O & A Level Ages :( 14 – 18) Instructions a. There will be 4 rounds in the event b. Each round will have a different set of questions with different rules and methods e.g. oral blitz round, written categorical round etc. with questions based on mathematics c. The correct answers will be awarded points d. The team with most points at the end of the final round will be declared winner e. Each team may bring other tools such as calculators etc. (IST will not provide these items) f. Space Fashion Theme “Space/Universe/Discovery” Time 3 hrs. Team 2 members Category Juniors: Class/Grade: 4- 7 Ages: ( 9 – 12) Instructions a. Kids wearing space costume will have a cat walk on the ramp b. Every kid will have a cat walk for two times c. Theme for the fashion show will be Space/Universe/Discovery d. Space Tableau Theme “Discovery” Time 4-6 Minutes Team 1 Team Category Juniors: Class/Grade: 4 - 6 Ages: ( 9 – 11) Instructions a. Contestant may perform either alone or as part of a group of maximum 10 people b. Each participant/team is required to send the details of their performance including duration of their act with the registration form c. IST will not provide any gadget/instruments that are involved in your performance d. The house sound system will be provided by the IST team and will be scaled to the venue used and reasonable requirements of the contestants. The Event heads will have absolute control over the sound system e. Only those props are allowed that can be carried on by the performer or performers assistant that do not require extensive set-ups. Only major props like tables and chairs will be provided by the host b. IST will not provide any gadget/instruments that are involved in your performance c. The house sound system will be provided by the IST team and will be scaled to the venue used and reasonable requirements of the contestants. The Event heads will have absolute control over the sound system d. Only those props are allowed that can be carried on by the performer or performers assistant that do not require extensive set-ups. No fire, smoke, knives, animals etc will be allowed. e. No modification to stage acts, equipment or sound is to be made for any attraction without the approval of the Event managers and coordinator f. Slots are limited so the selection of the dramas will be based on the quality of synopsis and the script of the play Limited entries are available and the teams will be registered on first come first serve basis. 2.10. Space Technology Teachers Training Workshop Theme Time Team Category Instructions “Space Technology and Applications” 8 Hours 2 member Science Teachers (School/Colleges) A particularly important goal of Space Technology Awareness Campaign is to provide training activities for teachers and other educators of young children. IST aims to give teachers the confidence to introduce space technology and applications in the classroom, and to create innovative methods for engaging young children in space technology. To achieve this goal, IST organizes teachers’ training workshop. a. Send the nomination of TWO/THREE teachers for the workshop b. It is open to all school students of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. This program shall enable students to obtain a solid understanding of space technology and its applications. Our program captures the imagination of children, making it a great stepping-stone to introduce youngsters to Space science and technology. Indeed, many scientists can trace their interest in science to a moment as a young child when they were first introduced to the wonders of the cosmos. Considering the vastness and beauty of the universe and our place within it provides a special perspective that can help broaden the mind and stimulate a sense of global citizenship and tolerance.
