Server consolidation overview
Why server consolidation?
• Reduce the number of total servers
• Run workloads at a higher density and better hardware utilization
• Reduce underutilized servers
Virtual machine workloads
• Better use of hardware and pooled resources
Virtualization models
• Hypervisor model (Hyper-V)
- Based on the host/guest paradigm.
- Multiple operating systems share a single hardware host
• Virtualization at the operating system level
- Host runs a single operating system kernel as its core
- Exports operating system functionality to each guest
- Guests must run the same operating system as host

Scenario
Contoso Travel has about 250 users and has
international websites that sell travel packages
They have implemented some Windows Server 2008 R2,
and some Windows Server 2012 servers.
Contoso will be replacing its
aging fleet of servers with new
hardware that support the latest
virtualization technology.
The plan is to deploy a proof of concept (PoC)
environment to virtualize about 10% of the
current server workloads on Windows Server
2012 and Hyper-V, and to evaluate performance,
manageability, and stability. If the PoC is
successful, then phase 2 will be to move forward
deploying a fully virtualized server room.
Hyper-V Server basics
Hyper-V Role installation
• Local or remote, using Server Manager or Windows
PowerShell.
Hyper-V Server settings
• Live Migration, Hyper-V Replica, default paths, adding
hardware
• Parent and child partitions
Virtual Switch Manager
• Private, internal, external switch types
• Not the same as Hyper-V Network Virtualization (HNV)
and Software Defined Networking (SDN)
Storage (remote and local storage options)
• Host scalability - up to 320 logical processors, 4 TB RAM,
1024 VMs per host

Hyper-V Virtual Machine basics
Creating virtual machines
• Hyper-V Manager or Windows PowerShell
• Generation 1 and Generation 2 VMs (Windows Server 2012 R2)
Virtual Machine settings
• Add hardware (disks, NICs, SCSI controllers)
• New VHDX files in contrast to VHD files
• Online VHDX resize (Windows Server 2012 R2)
• Support for 4K sector size disks
VM scaling
• Up to 64 virtual processors.
• Up to 1 TB RAM.

Generation 1 and
2 VMs
Previous versions of
Hyper-V had only firstgeneration virtual
machine technology.
Windows Server 2012 R2
offers two generations of
virtual machines to
choose from when you
create a new virtual
machine
Generation 1
Provides the same virtual hardware to the virtual machine as in
previous versions of Hyper-V
Generation 2
Provides the following new functionality on a virtual machine:
– Pre-Boot Execution Environment (PXE) boot, which uses a
standard network adapter
– Boot from a SCSI virtual hard disk
– Boot from a SCSI virtual DVD
– Secure Boot (enabled by default)
– UEFI firmware support

Demonstration:
Exploring Hyper-V Server and VM
configuration
Scenario
Contoso Travel is
concerned that their
workloads, once virtualized,
might not have the ability
to handle the network IO
All the new servers will have:
• the latest virtualization chipsets
• NUMA support
• dual onboard 10 GB NICs.
Memory requirements
change from day to day
for the workloads, as well
as the number of network
IOs during peak times,
Contoso Travel need to
know what technologies
are included with HyperV to support heavy
network loads.
Grow efficiently
Hyper-V network performance features
Virtual Receive Side Scaling (V-RSS)
• RSS distributes receive-side processing across multiple processors to eliminate CPU0 affinity on
the host
• V-RSS is new in Windows Server 2012 R2 and gives RSS support to VMs with multiple virtual
CPUs
Dynamic Virtual Machine Queue (V-DMQ)
• Processor cores are dynamically allocated to eliminate CPU0 bottlenecks during high network
traffic situations
•
Frees up CPUs during idle times
Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV)
• Provides remapping of interrupts and direct memory access
• Allows physical NIC functions to be directly mapped to VMs

Scenario:
Contoso has always given each
department a budget for servers,
software, and consulting as needed.
The IT budget is mainly for operational
costs like infrastructure servers, power,
storage and networking.
Contoso has recently invested in a SAN to provide storage for some of its mission critical
workloads, they mainly rely on direct attached storage (DAS) for most workloads.
Since the IT budget is now supplemented by each department based on
resource usage, there needs to be a mechanism in place
which will allow the IT department to track and report
on resource consumption at a department level.

Scenario:
Hyper-V 2012 Live Migration and Live Storage Migration can move a workload
from one Hyper-V host to another, while the users continue to use the VM.
Contoso Travel does not
have the IT budget to
buy expensive SANbased storage for all
virtual workloads, so
many will continue to use
local server storage.
When a VM migrates,
the storage must move
with it.
The new servers will be equipped with RDMA NICs to provide
maximum network performance from host to host, or host to SMB
storage services.
To achieve high levels of
availability, Contoso Travel
is going to implement
scale-out file servers to
host VHDX files.

• High-performance transparent failovers using SMB 3 keep your
applications running during more seamless failovers
• Increased availability solutions for both file- and block-based
storage clusters
• A wide range of storage options that give administrators
flexibility to choose the best option for the cluster role

CHKDSK
• In previous versions of Windows Server, if file system corruption
occurred the file system volume would be taken offline and its
data would be unavailable for an indeterminate period of time
while CHKDSK ran and attempted to repair the corruption
• The time for CHKDSK to complete was proportional to the
number of files on the volume, and customers could not
accurately predict how long this would take.
• For a single corruption issue, the entire volume and all of its
files would be analyzed offline
• This model was problematic for customers because it could
potentially impose significant downtime, which made it
challenging for customers to meet necessary business
objectives

Windows Server
2012 and 2012 R2
CHKDSK
Windows Server 2012
addresses this problem
by prioritizing file
system availability, even
when corruption is
present, and developing
a new model for
managing file system
corruption. The model
includes:
• Improved self-healing: NTFS instantaneously self-heals more
issues online without requiring CHKDSK to run offline
• Online analysis: Before Windows Server 2012, most of the
offline time required to run CHKDSK was spent scanning and
analyzing the drive. In Windows Server 2012, the analysis phase
of CHKDSK, which was responsible for the majority of the
offline time, becomes an online, background task
• Corruption correction: When the scan is completed, Windows
Server 2012 uses events and the management consoles to
inform the administrator that the volumes need to be repaired
and suggests a solution such as performing a remount or
reboot

Considerations for upgrading to and deploying Windows Server 2012 R2
• Windows Server 2003 upgrades require a clean installation or a stop at Windows Server 2008 or
2008 R2. Administrators will need to perform a clean installation and migrate roles and services
• In-place upgrades from 32-bit to 64-bit architectures are not supported. All editions of Windows
Server 2012 R2 are 64-bit only
• In-place upgrades from one language to another are not supported
• Upgrades that switch from a Server Core installation to the Server with a GUI mode of Windows
Server 2012 R2 in one step (and vice versa) are not supported. However, after upgrade is
complete, Windows Server 2012 R2 allows you to switch freely between Server Core and Server
with a GUI modes

When you install Windows Server 2012 and R2, you can choose between Server Core
Installation and Server with a GUI.
The Server Core Installation option reduces the space required on disk, attack surface, and
servicing requirements
Server Core installation is now the default and a security best practice
Graphical Shell and Management Tools are added and removed on demand with Server
Manager, Windows PowerShell, or Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM)
If you choose the Server Core option, you manage the server using remote user interface
tools, Windows PowerShell, or if necessary, locally using the command line or Windows
PowerShell.

In Windows Server 2012, the Server Core installation option is no longer an irrevocable selection that
is made during setup. Previously, in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008, if your
requirements changed, there was no way to convert to a full installation or a Server Core installation
without completely reinstalling the operating system. An administrator now has the ability to convert
between a Server Core installation and a full installation as needed.

SharePoint, and Remote Access
support they had with SBS.
Using a combination an Azure VM running an
instance of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials,
and Office 365 for SharePoint, remote access to
applications and Exchange, the group will get off
of SBS 2003 before support ends, and they will
retain all the updated features they enjoyed with

Changes in Windows Server 2012 R2 appear complex, not simpler. But it is simpler:
Many steps coalesced
The best practice is always the default
Why so much Windows PowerShell?
Single engine for configuration from both graphical and command line
Permits scripting of any component
Veteran Active Directory Domain Services administrators will find their existing knowledge highly
relevant. A beginning administrator will find a far shallower learning curve than was previously
needed

required to complete the domain controller installation
A new wizard to export Promotion options to Windows PowerShell
• Simplifies the process by automating subsequent Active Directory Domain Services installations
through automatically generated Windows PowerShell scripts
Other new features of
Active Directory Domain Services

• Active Directory Domain Services role deployment is now part of the new Server Manager
architecture and allows remote installation
• The active Directory Domain Services deployment and configuration engine is now Windows
PowerShell, even when you use a graphical setup
• Schema extension, forest preparation, and domain preparation are automatically part of domain
controller promotion and no longer require separate tasks on special servers, such as the Schema
Master
• Promotion now includes prerequisite checking that validates forest and domain readiness for the
new domain controller, lowering the chance of failed promotions

Grow efficiently
Hybrid storage pools and tiered storage
•
Use SSDs and Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) as
different tiers in the same storage pool, but the
tiers appear as a single disk
•
Windows automatically tiers data across
different disks
•
Windows tracks data temperature and moves
data at the sub-file level
•
Write-back cache improves performance for
real-world workloads
•
Only hot regions of a file (VHD, database, etc.)
need to move to SSDs; the cold regions can
reside on HDDs
•
Ability to pin files to the SSD tier (e.g., pin a
boot VHD to SSD to ensure quick booting) or
pin a low priority file to the HDD tier
•
Tiered storage engine honors pinned files first
before using SSD capacity for automatically
detected hot data
