DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF GATEWAY FOR PLANT SCIENCE RESOURCES By P.NATHIYA Research Supervisor Mr. C. RANGANATHAN Department of Library and Information Science BHARATHIDASAN UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION A Subject gateway helps users to locate relevant and high quality resources on the Internet. A subject gateway is nothing but the facility that allows easier access to network-based resources in a definite subject area. The simplest type of subject gateways are sets of web pages containing lists of links to resources. Subject gateway enables scholars to identify from a single point location of much the information they need. Statement of the problems: The research analyzed the thrust areas of resource and resource for plant science and the research tried to identify the subject gateway to help and develop the research on plant science. But the researcher found very minimal number of gateway on plant science. Based on the thrust areas of research on plant science of BDU and the minimal availability of plant science subject gateway made the researcher to choose the problem as “Design and Development of subject Gateway for Plant science.” The main objectives: To create linked collection of internet-based high quality of Plant Science Subject gateways. To keep Plant Science Subject gateways journals and Newsletters of Institute’s online. To establish a network of Plant Science Subject gateways studies/research centres situated in different parts of the country for sharing research resources. To provide online information of forthcoming conferences, seminars, training workshops in Plant Science Subject gateways research/studies centre. To connect websites of Plant Science Subject gateways studies departments of major research institutes. To link websites of other existing Plant Science Subject gateways information networks and systems e.g., INFLIBNET, AGRIS, ENVIS, etc. COLLECTION OF THE RESOURCE The present study is the survey of the available Web resources pertaining to the plant science profession, teaching, research, etc. The Web resources available on the Internet have been thoroughly evaluated. The researcher visited different online resources for the collection of data and for linking of relevant Web resources related to the plant sciences. Each site has been searched and described by its content and categorized according to information links. The criteria and evaluation of Web resources have been used for the collection of data and linking to the gateway. Methodology Designing of the gateway for plant science eresources is an information consolidation product and its preparation demands certain skill and knowledge. The major step which has to be followed for designing a gateway are as following. Identification of target users in plant science. Planning of the gateway Study of subject as discussed with experts, professionals etc Identification of several information items available Internet using various search engines. Selection of information sources. Categorization and arrangement of e –resources. Tools use for Study: Online tools for the data collection: Search engines. Meta search engines. Online directories. Websites related to library and information science. Reference and information sources on the Web. In a way, the available digital knowledge bases are filtered out from the big digital ocean, and be placed in a system for easy information access. An attempt has been made to Developing Gateway for plant science. These are different collection in e-journal,e-Books, edatabase and National and International level gateway. MY HOME PAGE: Web Address: http://bdulifescience.weebly.com/ E-JOURNAL An e-journal (electronic journal) is a journal published online. Full-text journal articles are available via a platform that provide both browsing and searching functions. Library users can access e-journals on the Library Website, within the campus network. E-Book’s An eBook is an electronic book, one you read digitally on your computer, laptop screen or on devices called ebook readers. An eBook is an online version of a book. Usually much shorter in the number of pages when compared to a traditional printed and bound book. E-Database An e-database is an organized collection of information, of a particular subject or multi-disciplinary subject areas. The information of an e-database can be searched and retrieved electronically. E-THESIS This site contains doctoral dissertations and other publications from the University of All of these full-text publications are freely accessible via the Internet. Conclusion: •The development of subject gateways in the Religious plant science can be fulfilling the original purpose of providing resource descriptions, a trend towards additional services like providing content in form of articles or primary sources as well as providing specialized communications platforms in form of discussion forum and mailing lists can be observed. •The vast amount of information available on the Internet can make searching a long, Complicated process. The Subject Gateway provides a more productive search.
