INTRA
INTRA – Intermodal Transport, is a project with objective
to improve the information flows in intermodal freight
transport.
The project focuses on standardisation of data messages,
which are exchanged between systems in a transport
chain.
Improvements of current standards will result in more
integrated systems that can exchange data without the
needs for manual conversions.

What has been done in INTRA
 An demonstrator showing information exchange between
different IP-nodes has been developed. Will be presented later
today
 A report showing the process of transforming EDIFACT
messages to XML, with help of UML, has been developed
 A report containing 6 XML messages used in IP
 A report showing XML message envelopes
 A report that illustrates and gives an overview of existing
standards of relevance for information exchange

Themis
Thematic Network on Intelligent freight Transport Systems
THEMIS -Thematic Network is part of the 5th Framework Program of the
European Commission, DG Energy and Transport.
The prime objective of THEMIS is to co-ordinate on-going activities for
research and development in the field of information systems in multimodal
transport in Europe, while providing at the same time a forum for
dissemination and concertation among all parties involved. THEMIS will thus
layout the basis for the integration of enabling IT technologies that will
contribute to a sustainable European freight transport system.

National standardisation
Norwegian General Standardizing Body (Norsk Allmennstandardisering)
NAS covers these sectors: consumer, environmental, health, medical equipment,
agriculture, fisheries, biotechnology and trade and office documentation.
Norwegian Council for Building Standardization (Norges Byggstandardiseringsråd)
NBR covers building and construction industry. This also includes “faste” off shore
installations. Areas of spesial interest are: construction products, projecting and
implementation, fire safety, energy, public health and environment and contract
standards.
Norwegian Electrotechnical Commission (Norsk Elektroteknisk Komite)
NEK is the Norwegian Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. It’s a member
of CENELEC and IEC.
Norsk Teknologisenter
NTS covers machine and engineering industry, including the off shore industry.
The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority (Post- og teletilsynet)
PT is an autonomous administrative agency under the Norwegian Ministry of
Transport and Communications, with monitoring and regulatory responsibilities for
the postal and telecommunications markets in Norway. The PT is self-financed,
primarily through fees and charges. It’s a member of ETSI and ITU.

International standardisation
ISO (International Organisation for Standardization)
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation of national
standards bodies from some 140 countries, one from each country. NSF is a member.
CEN (European Comitee for Standardization)
NSF is a member. CEN standards are established as Norsk Standard.
IEC (International Electrotechnical Comiteé)
The International Electrotechnical Commission is the international standards and conformity
assessment body for all fields of electrotechnology Norsk elektroteknisk komite (NEK) is the
Norwegian member.
CENELEC (Comite Europeen de Normalisation Electrotechnique)
The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. NEK is the Norwegian member.
ITU (International Telecommunication Union)
ITU is the global telecommunication organization. Post og teletilsynet (PT) is the Norwegian
member.
ETSI (The European Telecommunication Standards Institiute)
ETSI is a not for profit organization whose mission is to produce the telecommunications
standards that will be used for decades to come throughout Europe and beyond. PT is the
Norwegian member.
WSSN (World Standards Service Network)
World Standards Services Network (WSSN), is a network of publicly accessible World Wide
Web servers of standards organizations around the world.

Statements
 In principal the area of standardisation is well attended in
Europe
 There are few missing standards and most of the gaps are
being attended to already
 Unfortunately the work Europeans do in standardisation is not
getting a good measure of support from the Commission or
other bodies. There is a lack of co-ordination and orchestration
 Standardisation is too slow.
MARINTEK
Challenges
 Let the industry contribute stronger
 Development
 Suggest and comment on standards
 To harmonise the modes
 Exchange information between the legs
 Use common registers
 To better unifies initiatives (Norwegian)
