MISSION IMPOSSIBLE
After he is framed for the death of several colleagues and falsely branded a traitor, a secret
agent embarks on a daring scheme to clear his name in this spy adventure. Though it drew its
name from the familiar television series, director Brian DePalma's big-budget adaptation shares
little more with the original show than the occasional self-destructing message and the name of
team leader Jim Phelps (Jon Voight). The film focuses not on Phelps but his protégé, Ethan
Hunt (a reserved Tom Cruise), who becomes a fugitive after taking the blame for a botched
operation. He responds by banding together with a group of fellow renegades, and he is soon
maneuvering his way through a twisted series of double crosses that mainly serve as excuses for
spectacular high-tech action sequences. Much of the activity revolves around a missing
computer disk, with the film's most famous scene depicting Hunt's delicate efforts to retrieve
the disk from a secure, well-alarmed room in CIA headquarters.

INDIANA JONES
Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere
in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling
boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named
Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes,
Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything?
Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then
summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost
Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mysticalminded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first
secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose
daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones.

SWAT
Clark Johnson's big-screen adaptation of the 1970s television series S.W.A.T. stars Colin
Farrell as Jim Street, a young special weapons and tactics team member who, in the film's
opening sequence, is demoted after his hothead partner Jeremy Renner shoots a hostage while
trying to kill her captor. In need of good press, the higher-ups call in SWAT expert Hondo
Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) to put together an elite team that can bring some luster back to
the badge. He chooses Street, veteran T.J. (Josh Charles), and tough single mother Chris
Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). The new team survives a series of tests before hitting the streets.
Their first big assignment involves transporting an international criminal (Olivier Martinez) to
federal authorities. The criminal had offered a hundred million dollars to anyone who can bust
him out.

GHOSTBUSTERS
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan-based "paranormal
investigators". When their government grants run out, the former three go into business as The Ghostbusters, later
hiring Hudson on. Armed with electronic paraphernalia, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big
Apple of dozens of ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties. Tight-lipped bureaucrat William Atherton regards
the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of
unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long-dead Babylonian demon and "channelled" through beautiful cellist
Sigourney Weaver and nerdish Rick Moranis. The climax is a glorious sendup of every Godzilla movie ever madeand we daresay it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the
chubby, cheery Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be the most malevolent threat ever faced by New
York City? When the script for Ghostbusters was forged by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, John Belushi was
slated to play the Bill Murray role; Belushi's death in 1982 not only necessitated the hiring of Murray, but also an
extensive rewrite. The most expensive comedy made up to 1984, Ghostbusters made money hand over fist,
spawning not only a 1989 sequel but also two animated TV series (one of them partially based on an earlier liveaction TV weekly, titled The Ghost Busters.

BEVERLY HILLS COP
What's that wisecracking young black guy (Eddie Murphy) in that beat-up
Chevy Nova doing in lily-white Beverly Hills? He's Axel Foley, a Detroit
detective who's been sent on involuntary vacation because he refuses to drop
his intention of avenging his friend's murder. Warned by Beverly Hills police
chief Ronny Cox to stay out of trouble, Foley nonetheless dogs the trail of
above-the-law Steven Berkoff, the British crime czar who was responsible for
the murder of Foley's friend. With the help of sympathetic local cops Judge
Reinhold and John Ashton and lady friend Lisa Eilbacher, Foley attempts to
corner Berkoff in his mansion, which leads to a wild slapsticky shootout.

Public safety takes a turn for the worse in this hit comedy, which spawned a longrunning franchise. As a crime wave sweeps through a major city, the mayor decides
that part of the problem may stem from overly restrictive qualifications for police
officers, so she opens the door of the city's Police Academy to anyone who wants to
join. Soon, the new class is overrun with misfits and losers, including Carey Mahoney
(Steve Guttenberg), who is given the choice of joining the force or going to jail; Karen
Thompson (Kim Cattrall), a pretty cadet whom Mahoney has his eye on; Moses
Hightower (Bubba Smith), a mountain of a man who likes to tend flowers; and
Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow), who has an uncanny ability to imitate the sound of
practically anything. Constantly befuddled Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes)
and his lackey, Lt. Harris (G.W. Bailey), are none too thrilled with their new charges,
but as they try to wash their hands of the cadets, Mahoney and his classmates become
all the more determined to make good. The surprising success of Police Academy
spawned six sequels and two TV series.

PSYCHO
Phoenix officeworker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. She has to meet her lover
Sam in lunch breaks and they cannot get married because Sam has to give most of his money away in
alimony. One Friday Marion is trusted to bank $40,000 by her employer. Seeing the opportunity to take
the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam's California store. Tired after
the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into The Bates Motel. The
motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother. For
Marion Crane, it's been quite an eventful day. The day before, she had stolen $40,000 from her employer's
client, packed her bags and driven all day on her way to join her paramour several hundred miles away.
Now, she is taking a relaxing hot shower after her long day's journey. The remoteness of the motel suit her
purposes perfectly. The only sounds heard are the chirping of the crickets, the splashing of the water, and
her humming contentedly as the hot needles of water caress her aching shoulders.
