Time outside of the school day may be scheduled for rehearsals and performances. A limited number of public performances may serve as a culmination of daily rehearsal and musical goals. Students learn the history and language of journalism, develop communication skills in writing, designing and editing for a variety of media, understand news and the process of publication, and become more critical readers and viewers of mass media. The course includes study of communications history as well as the legal boundaries and ethical principles that guide journalistic writing. Important concepts in the course include: communication, transport of substances, locomotion, metabolic processes, defense, and protection. The central theme is how the body systems work together to maintain homeostasis and good health. The systems are studied as “parts of a whole,” working together to keep the amazing human machine functioning as an optimal level. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of body systems, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary actions, and respiratory operation. Students work through interesting real-world cases and play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries. At the completion of this course, students take the PLTW end-of-course assessment. Some students may qualify for college credit if they achieve high enough marks on this exam. Instruction includes the application of engineering and scientific principles as well as the use of Boolean algebra to solve design problems. Using computer software that reflects current industry standards, activities should provide opportunities for students to design, construct, test, and analyze simple and complex digital circuitry software will be used to develop and evaluate the product design. This course engages students in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, time management and teamwork skills.
