From The PrinciPal’s DesK News and Information from the Principals at Lancaster High School Presented by the Lancaster High School Journalism Classes Mr. Jack Greathouse, Principal VOL. I, NO. IV – December 2010/January 2011 – Luke Roberts, Editor/Nolan Flowers, Editor-In-Chief NHS Inducts New Members In Organization By Anni Monks On the night of Thursday, December 2, friends and family gathered in the LHS auditorium to honor the new inductees in the LHS branch of the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is an organization that includes students who excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The National Honor Society does much service and charity work within the community. Mr. DiDominico, the advisor of National Honors Society at Lancaster High School, is thrilled about the inductions of the new members. “I’m always excited to see a class of new, fresh blood,” DiDominico said. It is not only the staff that is showing excitement about this new class of Society members. “It’s really an honor to be a part of this group. Not only that, but it will look really good on college applications,” said Catherine Quamme, who is a new inductee. A meeting has already been held for veterans of the Society and the new inductees. The members are currently taking part in Christmas donation projects and are preparing for the next blood drive, to be held December 15th. From Mr. Greathouse… December has been a busy month at Lancaster High School. Students and staff have continued to work hard on academics. According to the Ohio Department of Education, Lancaster High School is an Excellent rated high school because of our student test scores, attendance rate and graduation rate. But, if we were rated by the many ways our students give back to the community, we would be Excellent as well! Many have participated in Holiday Festivities. Our Choir and Band students have been spreading holiday cheer throughout the city. Students and staff have collected and donated nearly 300 coats, over 2300 cans of food, eye glasses for the Lions Club and loads of toys for all those in need this season. Our students have also rang Salvation Army donation bells, gone Christmas Caroling at Fairfield Medical Center, raised money for the Cancer Society, adopted numerous families for the holiday season, including a small village in Honduras, and made small tool boxes and wooden toys. This is just a highlight of what our students do to give back to the community who gives so much to them. Our students at Lancaster High School are amazing! I am very proud of our students and staff and wish all of you a joyous and happy holiday! Happy Holidays! Lady Gales Indoor Track Gets Underway Gales Hope to Repeat Last Year’s Success By Trevor Cook By Justina Baker Lady Gales indoor track and field season is starting up again. A mandatory meeting is being held in the LHS cafeteria directly after school this week. Coming off of a great season last year with many members of the team competing at the state level, the boys indoor track team is back in action. Some of the seniors on this year’s team will be Scott Watts, Nolan Flowers, Connor smith, Curtis Ewing, Patrick Henson, and Isak Holt. All girls are encouraged to come to the meeting or speak to a coach to find out information about track and become a member of the team. Conditioning has all ready started, but is not mandatory until after the winter break. Girl’s outdoor track practices have not started and will not start until February. “Everyone should come out and join the track team; there are so many events you can compete in from pole-vault, distance running, sprints, long jump, high jump, shot put and distance. There is a track event for everyone,” said senior Karissa Conrad. ______________________________________________ Bowling Team Meets By Curtis Ewing Lancaster Bowling tryouts were held recently at Tiki Bowling Alley. Everyone who tried out for the team either made the varsity or junior varsity squad. All practices are now mandatory for all bowlers. Players found out on November 19th whether or not they made the varsity or junior varsity team. “I am looking forward to my senior year of indoor track, and I am expecting a lot out of my teammates this season,” Senior Curtis Ewing said. Qualifying for state last year and returning for the indoor season are juniors Brannon kidder and Jared Wentz. Brannon Kidder placed third last year at the state level in the 1600 with a time of 4:15.86. Wentz and Kidder were part of the state championship qualifying 4 x 8 team. These two are members the second fastest 4 x 8 team in LHS history with a time of 7:50.09. The Gales are looking for yet another successful season this year. “I have never run track before but I am really excited for what’s to come of this indoor season,” Senior Isak Holt said. ______________________________________________ Swim Season Looking Bright This Winter By Zaneta Block There was also a parents meeting after the first Lancaster High School’s swim team lost to Gahanna match on November 20th. “It’s a good way for parents to get to know the coach and what’s going on Tuesday night. Even though as a team the Gales didn’t pull out a win, individually some were able to perform this season,” bowler Mikayla Barnett said. well. All bowlers participated in the opening match November 20th at Tiki Lanes in Lancaster and competed November 30th at New Lexington Bowling Alley. Spectators are welcome at all events. Helena Abidin won the 200 IM by .01 seconds. “I was so glad when I saw I won,” said Abidin. A goal of Helena’s is to break the 200 IM record and to advance farther in the state tournament than she has in past years. Helena has high hopes of continuing to perform well. (Continued on Page 3) Lady Gales Basketball Getting Back on Track By Christian Long It is the second season under head coach Sarah Chevalier and the Lady Gales are looking to turn things around from the past two seasons. The Gales have gotten off to a slow start but continue to make positive strides. The Gales (0-4, 0-3 OCC) traveled to Gahanna on Friday to take on the Lions where they lost 64-49. The Lady Gales have continued to show improvement in practice and have picked up the tempo to turn things back around. The Gales will continue their road trip on Friday night when they travel to Grove City to take on the Greyhounds and will then travel to Jonathan Alder High School for a contest with the Lady Pioneers on Saturday. _____________________________________________ LHS Working Hard to Support Needy By Emily Anthony For this holiday season, LHS is offering many opportunities for students and teachers to be able to give back to those who need it the most. Some of the events include donating eyeglasses to Lions Club, bringing in gently used or new coats, and bringing in cans of food for the canned food drive. This is LHS’ 3rd year of sponsoring a canned food drive. Students can bring in canned foods any day between Monday, December 6th and Wednesday, December 15th to their first period classes to be collected. The canned food will be given to the food pantry for people who can’t afford to buy food themselves. The goal is to collect over 4,000 cans of food among all the first period classes by Wednesday. The class that donates the most canned food receives a homemade cookie party on the following Friday. Swim Season (Continued from Page 2) From the start, swimmers knew Coach Heather Parkman would be tough. “She’s a tough coach and expects a lot out of us,” Abidin said at the beginning at the season. “Even though she’s tough, the team is benefitting.” The one thing Coach Parkman wanted to improve on was the team confidence. “I want to raise the confidence level. Having a more confident team will help us all have positive attitudes,” Parkman said. According to the team, the confidence level is higher than it was at the beginning of the season. “The team is getting confident as the season goes on,” Abidin said. “We all have positive attitudes and are encouraging each other more.” Both swimmers and coaches are hoping for more to qualify for districts. Both Coach Parkman and Abidin have this down as a goal for the season. With the team confidence continuing to build and individuals performing strong, the season is already looking more successful than it was the previous year. ______________________________________________ Upcoming LHS Schedule December 20 – Board of Education Meeting December 20 – December 31 - All Schools Dismissed - Holiday Vacation January 3 – Board of Education Meeting – Reorganization January 14 - End of Grading Period/First Semester January 17 - All Schools Dismissed Martin Luther King Day January 19 – Late Arrival February 10 – Interim Reports Sent to Parents February 17 – Late Arrival February 21 - All Schools Dismissed Presidents’ Day
