The Highwayman
Different types of sentences
DAY 1
WALT
To understand metaphors and
how they can be used.
WILF
I can write sentences using
metaphors.
What is a metaphor?



A metaphor is a way of describing
something. It is when we say
something becomes something else.
E.g. The sun is a ball of orange flame.
A baby is a soft, cuddly blanket.
Find the metaphor

Here is the first verse of ‘The Highwayman’. Read
it and write the metaphors on your whiteboards.
The wind was a torrent of darkness among the
gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon, tossed upon
cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the
purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding,
Riding, riding
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn
door.
Were you right?

The metaphors were:

The wind was a torrent of darkness
The moon was a ghostly galleon
The road was a ribbon of moonlight

In each of these the object described has


become something else.
Find the metaphor again

There is a metaphor in this verse. Can you find it?
And dark in the old inn yard a stable wicket
creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened; his face was
white and peaked:
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like
mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s red-lipped daughter;
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the
robber say -
Metaphor fun!



In your books, write metaphors that
could be used to describe these:
A dog
A baby
What did you write?



Some ideas could be:
A dog is a snapping crocodile, its coat is the
white, crisp snow, its growl is a roaring lion,
and its ears are soft, silky purses.
A baby is a soft, cuddly blanket, it’s skin is
fluffy cotton wool, it’s eyes are round, blue
buttons, and it’s face is a chubby, round
peach.
Metaphor fun!








In your book write metaphors to describe
the following:
Your teacher
Your mum/dad
Your pet, or a friend’s pet
The weather
Your friend
The sun
The wind
How did you get on?

Come and share some of your
metaphors here:
DAY 3
WALT
To investigate different types of
sentences.
WALT
I can use ‘Inside/outside’, ‘As a’ and
‘Show not tell’ sentences to write a
description.
Different types of
sentences





Over the past weeks we have been looking
at different types of sentences.
Double AA sentences (two adjectives)
Show not tell sentences
E.g. Bess loosened her shining, black hair,
allowing it to tumble out of the dark, dusty
window, and the highwayman’s face burnt
like a brand.
Bess shook with anticipation, her heart beat
rapidly in her chest.
Different types of
sentences



We are now going to look at two more
sentences.
Inside/outside sentences.
E.g. Bess eagerly awaited the arrival
of the highwayman, (inside, however,
she was more terrified than ever).
As a sentences





These sentences use similes. A simile
is when we say something is like
something else.
E.g. The sun was as red as a rose.
Tim’s hair was like mouldy hay.
His sword shone like a gleaming jewel.
Her hair was as black as the dark,
velvet night.
Have a go!




Can you use as a sentences to
describe the following?
The moon was as ………….a……………
Bess’ eyes were as ……………the sky.
The football crowd’s cheer was as
……….a………………
What did you write?




Here are some ideas. You may have
better ones!
The moon was as bright as a shiny,
gleaming pearl.
Bess’ eyes were as blue as the sky.
The football crowd’s cheer was as loud
as a thousand roaring lions.
DAY 4
WALT
To use different sentences to write
about a character.
WILF
I can use ‘As a’ and ‘Show not tell’
sentences to write a description of
Tim.
You will need to think about
•Tim’s feelings for Bess.
•What he thinks about the
highwayman.
•What Tim looks like.
•Why he was there in the dark
inn-yard. What were his motives?
How did you get on?
Come and share some of your
ideas here!
DAY 5
WALT
To describe a character’s feelings.
WILF
To write a diary entry as Bess,
telling of her feelings for the
highwayman.
Sustained Writing Task




Your task is to write a diary entry as
Bess.
You are waiting for the highwayman.
Think about:
What you can see, what you can hear,
how you are feeling, what you are
thinking.
Sustained Writing Task





I shall be looking for the following in
your work:
Double AA sentences
Show not tell sentences
As a sentences
At least one metaphor
Here’s one I wrote earlier

I wondered, would he come? I sat waiting
by the draughty, cold casement. The moon
was a pearl set in a dark, velvet sky. The
stars were like twinkling diamonds set on a
royal crown. My heart beat rapidly in my
chest, I could barely breathe. I waited
eagerly for his arrival, (inside, however I felt
terrified at the prospect that he would not
come).
There’s more!


Suddenly I heard a sound in the distance. I peered
out of the window, leaning as much as I dared. My
fingers trembled as I plaited the dark, red love knot
in my long, shining, black hair.
What was that? Another sound, much closer this
time! Was he here at last? My breath caught in
my throat as I heard the horse’s hooves clattering
and clashing in the yard. My heart leapt as I heard
tapping on the shutters and the familiar whistle;
the one I loved so well.
