Thank you for your question about how hip-hop and rap music affects teenagers. I have found a number of journal articles that I hope will be helpful to you. The first article seeks to determine whether exposure to rap music videos could predict risky behaviors in African-American adolescent females: Wingood, G., et. al. (2003). A Prospective study of exposure to rap music videos and African American female adolescents’ health. American Journal of Public Health, 93(3), 437-439. Again, this search generated a number of articles. I selected the one that seemed to best meet your needs. As the above disclaimer mentioned, you may not be able to retrieve the full text of these articles off of the Internet. I would encourage you to bring these citations to your local library for further assistance: http://www.beavertonlibrary.org/ I hope that this information has been helpful to you. to write back if you need any additional information. Please feel free Thank you for using the ipl2! Critique: As this was my first “real” question and my practice question was “Ready Reference,” I spent about four hours working on this response. I initially began searching the regular Google website, but the results that I retrieved from there lacked credibility. After reading how some other classmates turned to Google Scholar, I decided to search there. I was disappointed at how many articles were only available for a fee. I worried that the questioner would not appreciate mere citations. Overall, though, I was satisfied with my response. I do not think that I would do anything differently. 2. If IPL Report Carlson 8 Critique: Still gaining experience with “Research” questions and using Google Scholar, this response took about three and a half hours for me to generate, from start to finish. I am satisfied with my response; however, if I had it to do over again, I would begin my search with the research from the FDA and include only a couple of articles to supplement their findings. It did not occur to me to search the FDA until after I had already spent so much time sifting through the articles on Google Scholar. 3. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to write back. Thank you for using the ipl2!!! Critique: Before claiming this question, I asked my boyfriend, an artist, about how easy it would be to find resources to this question. He told me that it would be fairly simple. When I claimed the question and began my search, I ran into a lot of difficulty because I am not an artist and have no art background, so I really did not know what it was I was looking for. The question took me three hours and forty-five minutes to answer. Along the process, I did repeatedly go back to my boyfriend looking for more specific terms (hence the “pop art” search term) and asking him whether the sources that I found were good. I was satisfied with my answer, and I cannot see anything that I could do differently. 4. I hope that these resources will be of use to you in writing your paper. If you need any additional help, please don’t hesitate to write back. Thank you for using the ipl2! Critique: After my frustration searching Dada, I claimed this question having background knowledge of The Catcher in the Rye. Even though the questioner mentioned looking at the ipl2 before asking, I decided to search the site myself. I was very disappointed that the literary criticism links led me nowhere, especially since it is such a popular book. So, I returned to Google Scholar. I first searched only “The Catcher in the Rye,” but being overwhelmed with results, I quickly added “phoniness” into the search box. This response took me about two and a half hours to generate. I was very happy with my answer, although I would have preferred using resources from the IPL2 instead of Google Scholar. I would not change how I went about researching and answering this question. Question: Needed by: 5/7/2010 Question: What is another symbol that was used in the holocaust? besides that Star of David and the Swastika location: Lewistown,MT,USA area: Other reason: in a research paper school: Yes sources_consulted: www.sirs.com www.lii.org Answer: Greetings from the ipl2!!! Thank you for your question as to what other symbols were used during the holocaust. Swastikas were worn by Nazis, and in areas occupied by Nazis, Jews were ordered to wear patches or armbands with the Star of David. Within the concentration camps, the Nazis used color-coded triangle badges to identify prisoners. Yellow triangles identified Jews. Brown triangles identified Gypsies. Violet triangles identified Jehovah’s Witnesses. Pink triangles identified Homosexuals. Green triangles identified Habitual criminals. Red triangles identified Political prisoners. Black triangles identified Asocials (prostitutes, vagrants, murderers, lesbians, etc.). Blue triangles identified Emigrants. In addition, letters were often included on the triangles to further distinguish individuals. Jewish offenders wore triangles of two different colors, combined in a six-pointed star, to denote their faith and their “crimes.” To verify this information and read more about the different letters and words used, please visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website: http://www.ushmm.org/research/library/faq/details.php?lang=en&topic=02# 04 This link is quite long and could break, so here is a shortened version for your convenience: http://tinyurl.com/29y4udl The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s website is the world’s leading on-line authority on the Holocaust. Since I had Carlson 20 IPL Report researched the previous question about concentration camps, I immediately knew where to look for appropriate resources. Due to all of the links and the need for all of the Tiny URLs, this response took about two hours to generate. I was very pleased with my response, and I would not do anything differently. One, I had never responded to a child before; two, the question had previously been claimed and then unclaimed; and three, the questioner did not want web resources. However, I decided to give it a shot. This response took me approximately two and half hours to generate. I was satisfied with my answer considering my constraints. I would have liked if I at least knew the questioner’s town so that I could check her local library for availability of the titles, but I thought that I emphasized enough that she could get additional and perhaps better help from the library nearest to her. I cannot think of anything else I could have done differently given the information that I was provided with. Reactions: Overall, I would say that I had a very positive experience working with e-mail reference. At times, it was tedious and frustrating, especially formatting my responses properly, but I was able to gain invaluable experience in answering reference questions without the pressure of a face-to-face encounter. If the encounters were conducted in-person or through a live chat, I think that I would have been able to gain more insight as to what the patron was looking for. At times, questions could be very vague, and there was little opportunity to ask for clarification. Also, while I did receive some positive feedback from the IPL administration, I never really knew whether or not the answers that I supplied were what the patrons were looking for. This type of feedback from the patron would have allowed me to alter my methods throughout the course of the experience. However, if the encounters were conducted in real-time, I do not know how thorough my responses would have been, seeing as to how long it took me to answer my questions. As for the future of reference services, I feel that e-mail reference will play a greater part. This day in age, a lot of people feel less inhibited asking for help through e-mail than in person. Also, a lot of people may not have access to a library for a face-to-face encounter. With many libraries facing devastating budget cuts, I believe that more people will be forced to turn to e-mail reference for assistance. IPL Report Carlson 24 From this project, I have learned how to provide adequate reference assistance through e-mail. I have also learned how to evaluate the sources of information that I use. Having to lead patrons through my search process, step-bystep, has helped me to think about how I locate information and explain this process to others. I have also learned to expect the unexpected; you never know what someone is going to ask. Having to rely on the scant information provided by the patrons of the IPL, I have realized how valuable a complete reference interview is to provide proper assistance. All of these skills will serve me well in my future work as an information professional. Through my experience with the IPL, I have gained confidence in my ability to assist others, even when the task seems daunting. I hope that when I am in the field working, I will not be behind some of the negative experiences that were chronicled by Dewdney and Ross.
