Linden High School Course Syllabus Italian 1 Mrs. Sopón 2012-2013 10 credits ~ Grade 9 - 12 e UC Requirement FL CSU Requirement Prerequisite: Minimum grade of “C” or higher in English or teacher recommendation Graduation: Fulfills the fine art/foreign language requirement Duration: 2 semesters Credit: 5 units per semester with a grade of “D” or higher Course Description: Italian 1 is an introductory-level course designed to give students basic communicative ability in Italian. Practice is given in all four basic skills--listening, speaking, reading, and writing-- By presenting the language in a variety of authentic contexts, the course seeks to provide an introduction to Italian culture and society. Italian 1 will emphasize the principle that language is culture and culture is language. Therefore students will be introduced to the history of ancient Rome and modern Italy, art, music and literature. All aspects of the course support the Expected School wide Learning Results (ESLR’s). Upon completing this course, students will possess the ability to satisfy a limited number of immediate needs, such as greeting people and making introductions; describing people, things, everyday activities, and telling time; describing articles of clothing; conversing about food and eating habits, family and relatives; describing rooms and furniture, and talking about events in the past. Students will take a Unit Test upon completion of chapter Quizzes (100 pts.) Students will take a quiz every week based on the material learned in class that week. Quizzes may be on: a. Vocabulary words b. Grammatical concepts c. Reading comprehension d. Cultural understanding Projects (200 pts.) Students will be assigned to do a project based on any cultural aspect of the lessons. Due date is the last week of the quarter. Please be advised that the instructor reserves the right to assign smaller projects during the quarter. Such projects will only be worth 100 points. It is estimated that students may complete a total of 3-5 small projects. Compositions (100-200 pts.) Students are expected to write a composition bi-weekly on an assigned topic. Presentations (100-200 pts.) Students will do weekly oral presentations. Class participation / class work / class preparation- All students are expected to actively participate in class discussions, review of homework assignments and class activities. All class work must also be completed during class, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Preparation for class is of outmost importance. Students MUST bring in textbook, notebook and writing utensils daily.
