Love and Peace or Else
And
Sunday Bloody Sunday
From Vertigo 05 Live from Chicago
Prelude
A Cameo “Appearance” by
Barenaked Ladies…
If I had a Million Dollars…
Opening Hymn: Beautiful Day
The heart is a bloom,
shoots up through stony ground
But there's no room,
no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck
and the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck
and you're not moving anywhere.
You thought you’d found a friend
to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
in return for grace
It's a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like
it's a beautiful day
It’s a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
You’re on the road
but you’ve got no destination
You’re in the mud,
in the maze of her imagination
You love this town
even if it doesn’t ring true
You’ve been all over
and it’s been all over you
It's a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
It's a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case
See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
See the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colours came out
It was a beautiful day
Don’t let it get away
A beautiful day
Touch me, take me to that other place
Reach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
What you don’t know
you can feel it somehow
What you don’t have you don’t need it now
You don’t need it now,
you don’t need it now
Beautiful day
Opening Acclamation
Celebrant:
Blessed are you,
holy and living God.
People:
You come to your people
and set them free.
Collect of the Day
Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about
earthly things, but to love things
heavenly; and even now, while we are
placed among things that are passing
away, to hold fast to those that shall
endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Song of Praise: Jesus Christ
Jesus was a man
who travelled through the land
A hard working man and brave
Well he said to the rich:
give your money to the poor
Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well he went to the preacher
he went to the law
He told them all the same
He said: sell all your jewelry
and give it to the poor
But they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
When Jesus came to town,
all the working folks around
Believed what he did say
Well the bankers and the preachers,
they nailed him on a cross
And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
And poor working people,
they followed him around
They sung and shouted gay
Well the cops and the soldiers,
they nailed him in the air
And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well this song was written in New York City
Of rich man, preacher and slave
Well if Jesus was to preach
what he preached in Galilee
They would lay Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Halle - hallelujah
Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Gospel: Mark 9:30-37
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Mark. Glory to you Lord Christ.
Jesus and his disciples went on from there
and passed through Galilee. He did not want
anyone to know it; for he was teaching his
disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is
to be betrayed into human hands, and they
will kill him, and three days after being killed,
he will rise again."
But they did not understand what he was
saying and were afraid to ask him.
Then they came to Capernaum; and when
he was in the house he asked them, "What
were you arguing about on the way?" But
they were silent, for on the way they had
argued with one another who was the
greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and
said to them, "Whoever wants to be first
must be last of all and servant of all."
Then he took a little child and put it among
them; and taking it in his arms, he said to
them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in
my name welcomes me, and whoever
welcomes me welcomes not me but the one
who sent me."
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you Lord Christ.

What One Can Do
The
Millennium
Development
Goals
…and what we can do
In September of 2000
the United Nations
and its member states
pledged to accomplish
a set of 8 goals
to reduce human
suffering across the
globe
by 2015
Some facts about
Human Suffering
in 2006
More than 800 million people go to
bed hungry every day
Every 3.6 seconds another person
dies of starvation
Every year, 6 million children
die from malnutrition before
their 5th birthday
More than a billion people lack
access to clean water and basic
sanitation
5 million people, mostly children,
die each year from water-borne
diseases
Every 30 seconds a child dies of
malaria
HIV/AIDS kills 6,000 people a day
while infecting 8,200 more
Civil war and political unrest
displace millions from their homes
Meanwhile…
high trade barriers prevent
exports from gaining access to
world markets
and weak governments drown in
unsustainable debt
In 2006
famine, drought, disease and war
combine to create unimaginable
human suffering
In all, more than 1.2 billion people
are living in extreme poverty
… and it doesn’t have to be that way
The Millennium Development Goals
represent a plan for ending extreme poverty
Clean water
for all
Feeding the hungry
Healing the sick
Improving maternal health
Reducing child mortality
School for every child
Empowering women
Global Partnerships
between:
Governments
Businesses
Churches
Individuals
But how much will it cost?
100 Billion
Dollars
…a year
SAY
WHAT!!!
That’s a lot of
money
How do we do
that?

Sermon Response: One
Is it getting better,
or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you,
now you got someone to blame?
You say one love, one life,
when it's one need in the night.
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
don't care for it.
Every three seconds…
a child dies of extreme poverty.
Every eight seconds a child dies of
water-borne causes…
Three hundred die during
the average Sunday sermon…
…sixteen hundred during
the average Sunday Eucharist.
One, cont.
Did I disappoint you
or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
and you want me to go without.
Well, it's too late tonight
to drag the past out into the light.
We're one, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other,
carry each other... one
One person in seven does
not have access to clean
drinking water.
One, cont.
Have you come here for forgiveness,
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
to the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got.
We're one, but we're not the same.
Well, we hurt each other,
then we do it again.
One, cont.
You say love is a temple,
love a higher law
Love is a temple,
love the higher law.
You ask me to enter,
but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
to what you got,
when all you got is hurt.
One, cont.
One love, one blood, one life,
you got to do what you should.
One life with each other:
sisters, brothers.
One life, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other,
carry each other.
One, one.
More than 100 million children
do not have access to education…
70% of them are girls…
Every year 500 000 women die in childbirth…
That’s 1370Itevery
dayhave to be this way…
doesn’t
…or 57 every
hour…
Together
we can change the world…
Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
What is one of the most important ways we
Christians Stand Up against injustice? How
do we seek the sustenance we need as we
seek justice for all of God’s children? We
Stand Up and we pray… And tonight we join
people all around the world who are
Standing Up against poverty and Standing
Up for the Millennium Development Goals…
Prayers of the People
Almighty God, your Son our Savior Jesus
Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he
might draw the whole world to himself:
Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the
mystery of our redemption, may have the
grace to take up our cross and follow him in
pursuit of your work of reconciliation in the
world.
God of love, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the poor, hungry, and
neglected all over the world, that their cries
for daily bread may inspire works of
compassion and mercy among those to
whom much has been given
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for schools and centers of
learning throughout the world, for those who
lack access to basic education, and for the
light of knowledge to blossom and shine in
the lives of all God’s people.
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for an end to the divisions and
inequalities that scar God’s creation,
particularly the barriers to freedom faced by
God’s children throughout the world because
of gender; that all who have been formed in
God’s image might have equality in pursuit of
the blessings of creation.
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the health of women, children
and families around the world, especially for
an end to maternal and child mortality, that in
building healthy families, all God’s people
may be empowered to strengthen their
communities and repair the breaches which
divide nations and peoples.
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for an end to pandemic disease
throughout the world, particularly the
scourges of HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and
Tuberculosis; that plagues of death may no
longer fuel poverty, destabilize nations, and
inhibit reconciliation and restoration
throughout the world.
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for an end to the waste and
desecration of God’s creation, for access to
the fruits of creation to be shared equally
among all people, and for communities and
nations to find sustenance in the fruits of the
earth and the water God has given us.
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer
Let us pray for all nations and people who
already enjoy the abundance of creation and
the blessings of prosperity, that their hearts
may be lifted up to the needs of the poor and
afflicted, and partnerships between rich and
poor for the reconciliation of the world may
flourish and grow.
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the departed, particularly
those who have died as a result of poverty,
hunger, disease, violence, or hardness of the
human heart;
God of love, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Collect for the Prayers: 40
I waited patiently for the Lord.
He inclined and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit
Out of the miry clay.
I will sing, sing a new song.
I will sing, sing a new song.
How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long, how long, how long
How long to sing this song?
You set my feet upon a rock
And made my footsteps firm.
Many will see,
many will see and hear.
I will sing, sing a new song.
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song.
I will sing, sing a new song
How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song? (repeat)
Confession
Let us confess our sins to God.
Silence may be kept.
Deacon and People…
God of love and mercy, we confess that we
have sinned against you, opposing your will
in our lives. We have denied your goodness
in each other, in ourselves, and in the world
you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done, and the evil
done on our behalf. Forgive, restore,
and strengthen us through our Savior
Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your
love and serve only your will.
Amen.
Absolution
Celebrant:
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive
you all your sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and
by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in
eternal life.
Amen.
Sung Response:
When Love Comes to Town
I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
I was under the waves
before love rescued me.
I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
Now I stand accused of the things I've said.
When love comes to town
I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town
I'm gonna catch that flame.
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town.
Used to make love under a red sunset
I was making promises I was soon to forget.
She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
But I left her standing
before love came to town.
I ran into a juke-joint
when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue,
I was dazed and in a dream.
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before love came to town.
When love comes to town
I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town
I'm gonna catch that flame.
Maybe I was wrong
to ever let you down
But I did what I did
before love came to town.
(repeat)
I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard
when the soldier drew his sword.
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide.
When love comes to town
I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town
I'm gonna catch that flame.
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town.
The Peace
May the peace of the Lord
be always with you
And also with you
Tonight’s offering benefits
and
for their work toward
the Millennium Development Goals.

People
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the
Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks
and praise.
Celebrant
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always
and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For
with your co-eternal Son and Holy Spirit, you
are one God, one Lord, in Trinity of Persons
and in Unity of Being; and we celebrate the
one and equal glory of you, O Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices
with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who for ever sing this
hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The Celebrant continues
We give thanks to you, O God, for the
goodness and love which you have made
known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel
to be your people; in your Word spoken
through the prophets; and above all in the
Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in
these last days you sent him to be incarnate
from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and
Redeemer of the world.
In him, you have delivered us from evil, and
made us worthy to stand before you. In him,
you have brought us out of error into truth,
out of sin into righteousness, out of death
into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord
Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had
given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it
to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is
my Body, which is given for you. Do this for
the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine;
and when he had given thanks, he gave
it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of
you: This is my Blood of the new
Covenant, which is shed for you and for
many for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command,
O Father,
Celebrant and People
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting
to you, from your creation, this bread and
this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to
send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that
they may be the Sacrament of the Body of
Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant.
Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we
may be acceptable through him, being
sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In the fullness of time, put all things in
subjection under your Christ, and bring us to
that heavenly country where, with all your
saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage
of your sons and daughters; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation,
the head of the Church, and the author of our
salvation. By him, and with him, and in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and
glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and
for ever.
AMEN.
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Savior Christ has taught us we now
pray,
Our Father in heaven
Hallowed be your name
Your kingdom come
Your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
And deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours,
Now and forever. Amen.
The Invitation
Alleluia. Christ our Passover
is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Gifts of God for the People of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ died
for you, and feed on him in your hearts by
faith, with thanksgiving.
Communion Hymn: One Step Closer
I’m ‘round the corner
from anything that’s real
I’m across the road from hope
I’m under a bridge in a rip tide
That’s taken everything I call my own
One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing
I’m on an island at a busy intersection
I can’t go forward, I can’t turn back
Can’t see the future
It’s getting away from me
I just watch the tail lights glowing
One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing
Knowing, knowing
I’m hanging out to dry
With my old clothes
Finger still red
with the prick of an old rose
Well the heart that hurts
Is a heart that beats
Can you hear the drummer slowing
One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing
One step closer to knowing
To knowing, to knowing, to knowing…
Communion Hymn: Elevation
High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here,
At the corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse, you elevate my soul
I've lost all self-control
Been living like a mole
Now going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
A star lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you could educate my mind
Explain all these controls
I can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation
A mole, living in a hole
Digging up my soul
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
Love, lift me out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you
A mole, living in a hole
Digging up my soul
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high, elevation
Elevation...
Elevation...
Elevation...
Elevation...
Elevation...
Elevation...
Postcommunion Prayer
Almighty and everliving God,
we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
and for assuring us in these holy mysteries
that we are living members of the Body of your Son,
and heirs of your eternal kingdom.
And now, Father, send us out
to do the work you have given us to do,
to love and serve you
as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Heaven on Earth
We need it now
I'm sick of all of this
Hanging around
I’m sick of the sorrow
I’m sick of the pain
I’m sick of hearing again and again
That there's never gonna be
Peace on Earth…
And if the darkness is to keep us apart
And if the daylight feels like it's
a long way off
And if your glass heart should crack
And for a second you turn back
Oh no, be strong
Oh, oh, walk on, walk on
What you got they can’t steal it
No they can’t even feel it
Walk on, walk on...
Stay safe tonight
You're packing a suitcase for a place
none of us has been
A place that has to be believed to be seen
You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom
Oh, oh, walk on, walk on
What you've got they can't deny it
Can’t sell it, or buy it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight
And I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
And you can only take so much
Walk on
You’ve got to leave it behind
You’ve got to leave it behind
We’ve got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you deal
All you count on two fingers
And all that you steal
You’ve got to leave it behind
(Halle Halle, Halle Halleluiah)
You’ve got to leave it behind
(Halle Halle, Halle Halleluiah)
Halle, halle
Halle, halle
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, halle
Halle, halle
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, hallelujah
I'm going home, sister
Halle, halle
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, halle
Halle, halle
See you when I get home
See you when I get home, sister
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, home...
Halle, halle
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, hallelujah
Halle, halle...
The Dismissal
Let us go forth in the name of Love,
remembering that we are One.
Thanks be to God
Postlude:
Where the Streets Have no Name
I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
That hold me inside.
I wanna reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name.
I wanna feel sunlight on my face.
I see the dust-cloud
Disappear without a trace.
I wanna take shelter
From the poison rain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the Streets Have no Name, cont.
Where the streets have no name.
We're still building and burning down love
Burning down love
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It's all I can do)
The city's a flood, and our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust
I'll show you a place
High on a desert plain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the Streets Have no Name, cont.
Where the streets have no name
We're still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there, I go there with you
(It's all I can do)
Our love turns to rust
We’re beaten and blown by the wind, blown by the wind
See our love turn to rust
We’re beaten and blown by the wind, blown by the wind
And when I go there, I go there with you
(It’s all I can do)
