Upward Bound
RESIDENT ACADEMIC ASSISTANT – MATH FOCUS
Stipend of $2,000-$2,300
Multiple Positions
Applications are being accepted for multiple resident academic assistants (RAA) with a
Math Focus to:
 Provide tutoring and mentoring support to high school students
 Requires strong leadership skills, disciplinary skills and supervisory experience
 Room and board during residential stay and fieldtrips
 Two week day program at The Evergreen State College – Tacoma
 One week supervising students on college visits
 Three week residential program at The Evergreen State College
The Upward Bound program at The Evergreen State College is an educational enrichment
program that promotes high school achievement and participation in post-secondary education
among low-income and first generation-to-college high school students. Upward Bound offers a
6-week summer experience to its program participants each summer. The Upward Bound
Summer Learning Institute includes core academic courses, electives, work internships, cultural
activities, and recreational activities. The summer program serves 90 students from diverse
backgrounds. The program’s target high schools are located in Lakewood and Tacoma.
The Summer Learning Institute curriculum is outcome-based, student centered and rigorous in
all academic courses. Service learning projects, cultural activities and on campus internships
will support the academic curriculum. The Accuplacer assessment will be utilized, measuring
students learning of core academic skills during the program. To ensure success, teachers will
work collaboratively across disciplines.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Upward Bound Resident Staff
Supervisor, the resident academic assistants will:







Provide appropriate leadership and role modeling to participants and support the
Summer Learning Institute’s Rules and the Code of Conduct.
Organize and lead student study tables Study tables will foster a positive learning
environment for participants.
Provide class room support in specific focus area
Live with small groups of students in campus housing during Residential Stay
Supervise students during field trips, during meals, recreational time, workshop hour,
project application hour, and small group reading hour.
Promote a healthy living community
Maintain a secure living environment of the residential halls, attend daily staff meetings
and briefings, assist in bed checks, monitor student behavior, enforce program rules
Upward Bound is 100% funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Undergraduates will be considered who demonstrate mature
approach to working with these populations and have experience in working with these student
populations and summer residential camps.
Math Focus: Strong understanding of one or more of the following: High School Math (Algebra
– Calculus), Mathematical Economics, Personal Finance, Applied Mathematics and/or Statistics.
Preferred qualifications includes undergraduate status and one year of experience in
counseling, tutoring, or mentoring youths from disadvantaged backgrounds OR 2 years of
successful college study if combined with demonstrated training and experience.
CPR/1st Aid Certification is required (opportunity to obtain certification will be provided).
STIPENDS: $2,000-$2,300 DOE for the entire program, including training. Room and
board will be provided during the residential stay at The Evergreen State College dorms and on
any overnight field trips.
SCHEDULE:
Staff training: up to four days, dates TBD
TESC Tacoma Campus Day Program: June 22 – July 2nd. Day shift
Field Trip: July 6th – July 10th including overnight stay.
Residential Stay at TESC Olympia Campus: July 12th -28th Afternoons to
Mornings. Remain on-call including mornings and during program travel.
Work week starts on Sunday afternoon. Fridays and Saturdays off.
