Ed.) by Andrade, Egasse, Muñoz, Cabrera Puche. !Hola! The main focus of Spanish 180 is on listening and speaking with reading and writing as supporting skills. Content areas include: expressions relating to daily life, environment, routine activities, and descriptions of people and places. Vocabulary will include simple greetings, leave takings, courtesy expressions, family members, numbers, time, dates, weather, colors, and basic objects in the immediate environment. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend and produce simple sentences dealing with schedules, addresses, telephone numbers, weather reports, short information articles, signs, and postcards. You will also learn about various aspects of Hispanic cultures. The course and the text are based on the Natural Approach to foreign language acquisition. That is, you will be acquiring language in the classroom, as opposed to learning it, much like a child acquires a first language. Emphasis will be on acquisition and not on learning. EXAMS We will cover chapters 1-6. There will be 5 vocabulary exams, covering chapters 1-5, an oral exam and a cumulative final exam. Of the vocabulary exams, the lowest exam score will be dropped and, therefore, will not count. Each exam will be worth 50 points. If you miss an exam, that’s the exam you get to drop. Please do not ask if you can make up an exam. The oral exam will be given on the second to last day of class, Tuesday, May 24, 2016. The oral exam will be a story exam. In each chapter we will be acquiring at least one short story. At the end of the course you will know at least 6 short stories that you’re be able to retell, using the correct personal pronoun(s). Each student will randomly choose from one of the six stories to retell, as well as a personal pronoun to retell that story. Retelling a story is often the easiest exam that students take. The following is the grading rubric that goes along with the oral exam. 1 Click here for an example of one of the stories: http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/1%20el%20nino%20EL%20NINO%20ORIGINAL%20story%201. docx Click here for the grading rubric for the stories oral exam: http://occonline.occ.cccd.edu/online/jbrown/Rubric_Speaking_WL_A180.pdf Exams will be given on the following dates. Smartphone dictionaries/Apps may not be used at any time. ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION: Attendance is extremely important. Attendance is worth 20% of your grade You are allowed 1 free absence Beginning with the 2nd absence, you will lose 10 points of your attendance/participation grade which comes out to 2% of your final grade for each additional absence. Students who leave early will count as ½ an absence. 3 tardies equals one absence There is no such thing as an excused absence. English in the classroom In class, you’ll be encouraged to speak Spanish at all times. In fact, you’re required to speak only Spanish during class, except for the last 5 minutes of class. Before the break, students who speak English will not lose any points. After the break, students who speak English will lose 1 point of their class participation grade. Spanglish is not permitted nor may you say, “Como se dice + English word.” Proper nouns are fun and are completely acceptable.
