In Control of Achieving the Goal ©2002 Dr. B. C. Paul Way of the Beaver In Control of Achieving the Goal A playing field with clearly marked territory – Goals and values define the playing field and rules – Leaders assign positions but then get off the field and let them play – Individual freedom to take charge comes from knowing what territory is yours and that management will back you in handling it In Control of Achieving the Goal Thoughts, Feelings, Needs and Dreams are listened to, respected and acted upon – Golden Rule of Management: Value individuals as persons • Managers own ego and sense of self worth must not be based on jerking the chains of others – Everybody needs access to information - it is the gatekeeper of the power to make correct decisions – You can’t be in control if the rest of the organization rips your work apart • Manager needs to go to bat for his team and make sure that does not happen Dignity in Individual Responsibility Work must be Challenging but within the ability of the individual to achieve – Choose positions for people that are within their reach but challenging – Provide training for people to do their jobs – Set Production expectations that allow them to learn and grow • don’t demoralize by setting goals out of reach • don’t demean by denying them the dignity of a fair days work Prolog The Way of the Beaver Fulfills God’s Plan for the Beaver – The Spirit of the Squirrel defines a role and fulfillment for the individual as part of the organization and society – The Way of Beaver defines the way the organization treats the individual • Its not enough to tell someone their work is important - they must be treated that way as well – Do Right Work - the Right Way
