Artwork Guidelines & Contest Official Rules
1. The “Symbol of Freedom” Art & Essay Contest is open to 7th grade students residing in Maricopa
County only. 7th grade students who are immediate family members (such as siblings and children) of
employees, officers, directors of Southwest Airlines, AirTran Airways, Suns Legacy Partners, L.L.C.
(the “Phoenix Suns”), the National Basketball Association and its Member Teams, NBA Properties, Inc.,
Phoenix Arena Development Limited Partnership, Sports & Entertainment Services, L.L.C., and each of
their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, owners, employees and agents are not eligible
to participate.
2. Students should depict what “A Symbol of Freedom” means to them in their artwork entries
3. Artwork entries must be 22” tall x 28” wide (poster board size)
4. Artwork must be two-dimensional: no collages, masks, sculptures, jewelry, fiber/weavings, etc.
5. The following mediums may be used:
 Paint: oil paints, acrylics, watercolor, oil pastels, mixed media, etc.
 Sketch: color pencil, ink, markers, crayons
6. Artwork entries must be the artists’ original work
 Any entry copied from a photo or painting, traced or designed by someone other than the artist will
be disqualified
7. An original essay (250 words or less) must accompany each student’s artwork entry and release form
 Please see the attached essay form for essay topic options
 Essays must not be entered in any other competition or violate the rights of others
8. If a project is missing any 1 of these 3 components (artwork, essay or release form), it will be
disqualified from the contest
9. All completed art & essay submissions must be delivered by 4:00pm Friday, February 6th, 2015 to:

Main entrance is located on the southeast corner of 1st St & Jefferson in downtown Phoenix:
10. Judging will begin Tuesday, February 9th, 2015; therefore, no extensions will be provided and a panel of
judges will review all qualifying artwork by Monday, February 13th, 2015. Ten (10) winning artists will
be selected, based on their artwork depictions of what “A Symbol of Freedom” means to them and the
content of their essays, and will be notified no later than Friday, February 13th, 2015. The entries will
be ranked using the following criteria: (a) Originality/creativity (65%), (b) Appropriateness to subject
matter (25%), and (c) Sincerity (10%). The entrants with the highest overall scores will win. In the
event of a tie, winners will be selected based on the Originality/creativity criterion.
11. The ten (10) students whose artwork is chosen will win a 4-day/3-night trip to Brooklyn, NY
March 4th – 7th, 2014 to tour national museums and historic landmarks, and attend the Phoenix Suns @
Brookyln Nets game on March 6th, 2015. This trip includes round-trip airfare for two (2) to Brooklyn,
NY from Phoenix, AZ; hotel accommodations for a three (3) night stay in Brooklyn, NY (based on
double occupancy); tours of the national museums and historic landmarks; and two (2) lower level
tickets to the Phoenix Suns @ Brooklyn Nets game. The approximate retail value of each prize is
$1,500.
 One parent or legal guardian must accompany each student and proof of legal guardianship must be
provided by Wednesday, February 23rd, 2015.
o If a parent or guardian cannot travel to Brooklyn, NY with the winning student, the trip will need
to be forfeited
 Every person attending the trip must provide a valid social security number and a photo
identification card
o If a winner or his/her parent/legal guardian cannot provide a photo ID, the student will forfeit the
trip and an alternate winner will be chosen
12. Taxes and Expenses. Winners are responsible for any local, state and federal taxes. Any additional
expenses incident to any prize that are not specifically mentioned in these rules are the responsibility of
each respective winner.
13. A list of winners can be obtained by writing “Symbol of Freedom” Art & Essay Contest Winners, C/O
Phoenix Suns, Attn: Stephanie Lovingood, 201 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix, AZ, 85004.
14. By participating in this contest, participants agree to be bound by these rules. No transfer, assignment,
cash redemption or substitution of prizes is permitted except by the Phoenix Suns due to prize
availability, and then with a prize of equal or greater value. By accepting prizes, winners agree that
Southwest Airlines, Suns Legacy Partners, L.L.C. (the “Phoenix Suns”), the National Basketball
Association and its Member Teams, NBA Properties, Inc., Phoenix Arena Development Limited
Partnership, Sports & Entertainment Services, L.L.C., and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries,
affiliates, directors, owners, employees and agents will have no liability and will be held harmless by
winners for any liability, loss, injury or damage to property or to person, including death, due in whole
or in part, directly or indirectly, by reason of the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of the prizes or
participation in this sweepstakes, even if caused or contributed to by the negligence of the Phoenix Suns,
Southwest Airlines or the National Basketball Association. Participants agree that the decisions of the
Phoenix Suns related to this contest are final. By participating in sweepstakes, winners consent to the
use of their names, likenesses and/or voices for any advertising or promotional purposes without further
consent or compensation. Winner hereby agrees and consents, without further authorization,
compensation or remuneration of any kind, to the use of winner's name and/or likeness in any and all
advertising promotions and other publicity conducted by Southwest Airlines, the Phoenix Suns, the
National Basketball Association and its Member Teams, NBA Properties Inc., and each of their
respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliates,except where prohibited by law.
15. Void Where Prohibited. This contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law.
