Notes on area of a rectangle.

Finding the area of a rectangle is fairly easy.

Area of a rectangle is Length times Width ( This formula is specified on your NJ Ask reference sheet. I happen to think that the formula is worth remembering)

Area of a rectangle = L • W

Length

Example # 1:

7 cm

Width

12 cm

Area of this rectangle = 12 cm x 7 cm = 84 square centimeters or 84 cm 2 .

It is very important that the units are specified, if not your answer is wrong. 84 without the units specified is incorrect.

Example # 2

6 inches

7 inches

Area of the above rectangle is 7 inches x 6 inches = 42 square inches.

Given what we know, we can find the area of this polygon below.

12 cm

11

4 cm

5 cm

8 cm

5 cm

Why?

Step #1 We can break this up this polygon into two rectangles

Step # 2 find the area of each rectangle

Step # 3 add the areas of the individual rectangles.

Please note that there is another way to break up this shape. You have the freedom to break up shape the way you want to.

Step # 1:

Rectangle # 1 Rectangle # 2

11 cm

5 cm

4 cm

8 cm

Step # 2:

Area for rectangle # 1 = 11 cm x 4 cm = 44 square cm.

Area for rectangle # 2 = 8 cm x 5 cm = 40 square cm.

Step # 3:

The area of the polygon is 44 + 40 = 84 square cm.
