Clifford Steed 2015 - 2016 Room 5-205 Steedc@lake.k12.fl.us 352-787-5047 Ext. 7195 Algebra II Course Objective This course will focus on the mathematic standards set by the State of Florida for Algebra II and the exam at the end of the year. We will cover equations, inequalities, linear equations and systems, quadratics, polynomials rational and radical exponents, logarithms, and probability and statistics. All of these topics are covered on the exam in May. Problems will be presented and solved in four ways: analytically, numerically, graphically and verbally. Course Outline Unit one: Linear Functions (10 days) 1. Solve word problems 2. identify and evaluate functions 3. Graph and interpret equations and inequalities Unit two: Absolute value ad systems of equations (10 days) 1. Graph and interpret absolute value equations 2. Graph and interpret step functions 3. Solve systems in 2 and 3 variables Unit Three: Quadratic functions and complex numbers (20 days) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Graph parabolas Solve quadratic equations Write quadratic functions from real word context Write quadratic functions given Zeros Complex numbers Solve quadratic systems Unit Four: Polynomial Functions (20 days) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Operations of polynomials Analyze and graph polynomials Solve polynomials Divide polynomials Write equations of polynomials from given Zeros Unit Five: Rational functions (20 days) 1. Identify key features of Rational functions (20 days) 2. Simplify rational expressions 3. Solve rational equations Unit Six: Radical functions and rational exponents (15 days) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Simplifying radicals and rational exponents Solve radical equations and power equations Graph radical functions Find compositions of functions Find inverse of functions Unit Seven: Exponential and Logarithmic functions (15 days) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Write, evaluate and graph exponential functions Write, evaluate and graph logarithmic functions Use properties to condense and expand logarithms Solve exponential equations Solve logarithmic equations Unit Eight: Trigonometric functions (10 days) 1. 2. 3. 4. Identify Sine, Cosine and Tangent Verify other Trig identities Solve real world problems using trig ratios Determine Trig values Unit Nine: Sequences, series and probability and statistics (18 days) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Arithmetic and geometric sequence and series Data collection Measure of central tendency Conditional probability Z scores Each of these units are timed but times are subject to change. We should have time at the end of the year to review and prepare for the exam at the end of the year. Materials Needed All materials will be needed daily. I do not provide basic materials (paper and pencil). The textbook will be used every day and is needed for success in this course. Students are to be responsible for keeping the text book in good shape. Students will need to buy a notebook to take notes and organize themselves. A 3 ring binder is the best option for a notebook but is not the only choice. Paper and something to write with is mandatory every day and not provided by the teacher. Cornell Notes are strongly encouraged in this class. Any notes taken in Cornel style may be used on the test or quiz. Any additional materials (glue, markers, graph paper…) needed for class will be provided by the teacher. Class Rules 1. Bee here and on time - Success depends on your attendance. Time is important, don’t waste it. 2. Bee prepared – Have your own materials. I do not have materials for you. All of my school supplies are at Windy Hill Middle School 3. Bee responsible – Do your assigned work on time and correctly the first time. The class is not hard if you do your assigned work on time. 4. Bee respectful –Keep your hands off others and their stuff. If it is not your leave it alone. 5. Bee Courteous – Everyone learns at a different rate. We must make sure that we have an emotionally safe classroom Failure to follow the Class Rules: First Offence – Warning. Everyone is entitled to a mistake. We will go over the rules and consequences Second Offence – Parent conference. We will go ever the rules and consequences Third offence – Parent conference, Detention. We will go over rules and consequences. Failure to show for my detention will result in a referral and a reschedule of my detention. Fourth Offence and after– Referral to administration. Assessments Students will have various opportunities to show their knowledge of material covered in this class. It is critical that students be in class and do the required work in a timely manner. Do not get behind. Mathematics is a building process, miss one layer of the building process and it becomes much harder to build the next layer. The more you miss the harder it will get. County rules will apply to all make up work. Homework: Homework is given almost daily. Make up homework must be done before the Unit test is given. Do not get behind. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given at regular intervals. Cornell notes may be used during a quiz to help the student with the information. Tests: Tests are given at the end of each unit. Test will cover current information and prior information. Cornell Notes may be used during the test. Projects: Projects are given to supplement class information and not given to just improve a student’s grade. Extra Credit: There is no extra credit given. Get all of the credit offered and extra will not be needed. Mid-Term, EOC exams: The two tests are given by the County Mid-Term and the EOC. All information studied in this class will be covered on these two tests. There will be information taught in this class that will not be on the two exams but used in preparation of more advanced classes.
