Entomology Study Guide 1. Identify the insect by picture including Order and Common Name 2. identify the type of mouthpart 3. Identify the type of metamorphosis of the insect Insect Anatomy • Have a hard exoskeleton that protects internal organs – Must shed it to grow Mouthparts • Determines the order of the insect • Determines the damage it will inflict on a plant • 4 Most Common Types: – 1. Piercing- sucking – 2. Chewing – 3. Siphoning – 4. Sponging Pierce and Suck Mouth • form a tube which is inserted into food source • food may be plant, insect, Chewing Mouth • Have large mandibles (jaws) on each side that move from side to side – Often have noticeable, finger-like palps on each side of the mouth Siphoning Mouth • Long, straw like structure that sucks nectar from flowers Sponging Mouth • Release digestive enzymes from mouth which liquefies the food source and they suck it up through the sponge like mouthpart Metamorphosis • Metamorphosis= how the insect grows/changes form -Ametabolous= no metamorphosis, look the same as larva and adults, just get bigger Metamorphosis • Incomplete or Hemimetabolous – larva and adult look similar, but they may grow wings, change shape, change color as they get larger Metamorphosis • Complete or Holometabolous– The larva looks completely different from the adult form
