Navigation solutions powered by Europe WORKSHOP: European GNSS Applications in H2020 Introduction Christoph Kautz Prague, 4 February 2014 Navigation solutions powered by Europe 1 Horizon 2020 Navigation solutions powered by Europe Horizon 2020 A core part of Europe 2020, Innovation Union and European Research Area Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing peoples’ concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment. Strengthening the EU’s global position in research, innovation and technology The European GNSS Programmes 2 Horizon 2020 Navigation solutions powered by Europe What is new? A single programme bringing together three separate programmes/initiatives*) More innovation, from research to retail, all forms of innovation Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, clean energy, transport, security Simplified access, for all companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries and beyond. *) 7th research Framework Programme (FP7), innovation aspects of Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), EU contribution to European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) The European GNSS Programmes 3 GNSS Market Navigation solutions powered by Europe 7 bln GNSS devices by 2022 – almost one for every person on the planet Global GNSS market size 300 CAGR: 5% € (billions) 250 CAGR: 9% 200 150 100 50 0 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Core revenue (Global) Enabled revenue (Global) • • The projected long-term growth gives significant business opportunities for GNSS market. Along with the rapid development of new services and applications, the business environment of GNSS market is demanding and requires constant innovation on the supply side. The European GNSS Programmes 4 Galileo State of Play Navigation solutions powered by Europe The first two operational satellites were launched on 21 October 2011 The third and fourth Galileo satellites, completing the IOV quartet, were launched on 12 October 2012 On 12 March 2013, the first ever position fix using only Galileo satellites and ground segment was achieved. The In-Orbit Validation phase of Galileo is about to be concluded. The full operational capability of the Galileo system will be reached by 2020 The European GNSS Programmes 5 Galileo State of Play Navigation solutions powered by Europe Full Operational Capability Full services, 30 satellites 2018 Initial Operational Capability Early services for OS, SAR PRS and CS 2014/2015 In-Orbit Validation 4 fully operational satellites and ground segment 2013 GIOVE A/B 2 test satellites 2005/2008 Galileo System Testbed v1 Validation of critical algorithms 2003 The European GNSS Programmes 6 EGNOS State of Play Navigation solutions powered by Europe EGNOS Open Service is operational since October 2009 Its Safety of Life service has been declared operational in March 2011 First commercial flights in Europe to use EGNOS-based LPV procedures at Alderney airport (Channel Islands), since December 2011 Around 150 approach procedures making use of EGNOS for aircraft landings approved in Europe The EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) was declared operational in July 2012 LPV: Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance The European GNSS Programmes 7 GNSS Applications in Horizon 2020 Navigation solutions powered by Europe Galileo Call Synergies with other topis Galileo Applications in Horizon 2020 Navigation solutions powered by Europe Smart, green and integrated transport •MG.3.5-2014.
