College Purpose
Centre College is a small, independent, and selective educational community dedicated to study
in the liberal arts as a means to develop the intellectual, personal, and moral potential of its
students. Centre nurtures in its students the ability to think logically and critically, to work
creatively, to analyze and compare values, and to write and speak with clarity and grace. It
acquaints students with the range of accomplishments of the human mind and spirit in a variety
of arts and theoretical disciplines. It enables students to choose and fulfill significant
responsibilities in society. In short, Centre’s highest priority is to prepare its students for lives of
learning, leadership, and service.
A long and rich tradition of tolerance, freedom of enquiry, and community informs all aspects
of college life. Centre accomplishes its goals in an atmosphere of caring and respectful
relationships among faculty, students, and staff, aided by its broadly conceived, nonsectarian,
Judeo-Christian heritage. This tradition commits Centre to a belief in the unconditional value of
each human being, to an appreciation of the differences among people, and to a recognition of
the close connection between responsible self-development and community well-being.

Small public university: William & Mary :
Enrollment: 8200 (2011)
William & Mary Mission Statement:
"The College of William and Mary, a public university in Williamsburg Virginia, is the second-oldest institution of higher learning
in the United States. Established in 1693 by British royal charter, William and Mary is proud of its role as the Alma Mater of
generations of American patriots, leaders and public servants. Now, in its fourth century, it continues this tradition of
excellence by combining the best features of an undergraduate college with the opportunities offered by a modern research
university. Its moderate size, dedicated faculty, and distinctive history give William and Mary a unique character among public
institutions, and create a learning environment that fosters close interaction among students and teachers.
The university's predominantly residential undergraduate program provides a broad liberal education in a stimulating academic
environment enhanced by a talented and diverse student body. This nationally acclaimed undergraduate program is integrated
with selected graduate and professional programs in five faculties -- Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Law, and Marine
Science. Masters and doctoral programs in the humanities, the sciences, the social sciences, business, education, and law
provide a wide variety of intellectual opportunities for students at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
At William and Mary, teaching, research, and public service are linked through programs designed to preserve, transmit, and
expand knowledge. Effective teaching imparts knowledge and encourages the intellectual development of both student and
teacher. Quality research supports the educational program by introducing students to the challenge and excitement of original
discovery, and is a source of the knowledge and understanding needed for a better society. The university recognizes its special
responsibility to the citizens of Virginia through public and community service to the Commonwealth as well as to national and
international communities. Teaching, research, and public service are all integral parts of the mission of William and Mary."

Libraries
Because Wikipedia looks bad in a bibliography.
William & Mary’s extensive library system is the collective brain of the university. Within its million–plus books and
hundreds of thousands of periodicals, journals and electronic databases, you can find the sum total of human
knowledge. It’s like the Internet, without all of the made up stuff.
Swem Library was renovated in 2005 and is regularly ranked within the top ten of the “Best College Library” category by
Princeton Review. It is the biggest library on campus, staffed by ridiculously knowledgeable and helpful librarians who
will even answer queries by instant message. Find the information you need in Swem’s print and electronic collections.
Check out free laptops, iPods and videos, or work with your friends in the Information Commons. Make your own digital
masterpiece in their state-of-the-art Media Center. Take advantage of the latest technology in the Interactive Graphics
Lab. Discover the past in the manuscripts and archives of Swem’s Special Collections Research Center.
Swem has Summon, an online research tool that allows you to search dozens of popular electronic databases at once.
Most allow you to view full-text books, journals and articles, even from the comfort of your room. But you might want to
go to Swem anyway. The Greenberry's Coffee and gourmet pastries and sandwiches at Mews—Swem’s own coffee
shop—is worth the trip alone. And Swem is the place on campus to study late into the night.
Each of William & Mary’s nationally ranked graduate and professional schools has its own library with specially trained
staff. The Law Library—the oldest in America—is home to the historic Thomas Jefferson Collection, as well as primary
and secondary source materials covering the entire breadth of Anglo-American law.
The Mason School of Business Library, located on the second floor of the stunning Alan B. Miller Hall, offers the latest
online tools like Bloomberg, journals and videos for studying real-world business practices. The William J. Hargis, Jr.
Library at VIMS holds the ever-expanding collection of marine science reports, studies, theses and scholarly papers
produced by VIMS staff and students. And the Education Library re-located to its new home in the cutting-edge School of
Education building in 2010.
