Please provide a concise, yet comprehensive, statement that explains the reasons for requesting
the change. Include documentation or assessment information supporting the specific request (if possible).
The department is requesting curriculum changes for the following reasons:
 The department determined that a specific Professional Media Capstone course was
necessary to best meet academic and practical needs for Professional Media majors, to
prepare majors to seek employment in the media industry, to successfully integrate majors
into the workforce, and to have majors ethically/creatively/appropriately/productively use the
knowledge and experiences they gained through their coursework and extracurricular
activities related to professional media leading to the creation of a professional portfolio.
Additionally with the creation and implementation of STLR, a specific capstone course will
allow for improved assessment.
 The lab component is no longer offered for any MCOM course. In the past several years, labs
were deleted from multiple courses. The last labs are being formally deleted through the Fall
2014 curriculum process.
 MCOM 2511 Television Station Participation and MCOM 2531 Newspaper Participation are
replacing MCOM 2713 Media Participation to meet scheduling, resource, student, staff, and
faculty needs.
 MCOM 3263 Radio and Television Writing has not been offered in several years and is being
formally deleted through the Fall 2014 curriculum process.
 New elective options are being added to reflect new courses and new directions within the
major to include reporting, anchoring, producing, social media, new radio formats,
documentary, and sports media.
 Note: Course numbers for new courses were verified as available with Sue Ryan on February
25, 2014.
