ACT Practice Writing Prompt Question: According to the Michigan High School Athletic Association, athletes must maintain a certain grade-point average in order to participate in high school athletic competitions. Some parents and staff insist that the current requirements are necessary because we need to stress the importance of academics. Others believe that sports teach athletes valuable lessons outside of the classroom and academics should not hinder participation. Should all students be allowed to participate in athletics regardless of grade-point average? In your essay, take a position on this question. You may write about either one of the two points of view, or you may present a different point of view. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position. YOU WILL HAVE THIRTY MINUTES TO WRITE! Benign WORD of the DAY (Adjective) I was relieved that the tumor taken out of my dog’s eye was benign. Be sure that where you information is coming from is a reputable souce • YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTES – TAKING NOTES = COPYING AND PASTING • Find a place to take notes, I would recommend electronic but if you are more comfortable with hand written that is fine. Example Type or Write Address: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/till/ Author: WGBH Educational Foundation Notes: Demure WORD of the DAY (Adjective) Tim’s new girlfriend had pink hair and played the guitar, she was anything but demure! Demure: reserved or modest behavior New Release Think of this as a Front Page article, big news that would have applied to your person at some point in his/her life. Create a Headline that would draw interest to your story: Ex: “Dead Teen’s Last Words Inspire Millions” New Release Although this article will BEGIN with information that relates directly to the event you are focusing on, you will be able to include background information on your person as your ‘story’ progresses. Possible News Release Outline P1: information on Milam and Bryant confession (told as BREAKING NEWS!)+ THESIS: The brutality that was shown in Emmett Till’s murder will be a catalyst in the Civil Rights Movement. P2: Explain the trial, and that Bryant and Milam have already been acquitted. P3: What happened in Money that led to ET’s death? The whistle, the kidnapping, the beating... P4: Reactions to the murder, how the trial has begun to change history, the direction society seems to be moving now. P5: Restated Thesis: Emmett Till’s life and legacy will continue to inspire the need and fight for equality. + Summary of his life and death. Research means: YOU MUST add outside info to your paper • Adding quotes to your paper backs up your opinion and shows that you know what you are talking about! Validates your opinion and ideas! • It is important to CITE the information as you include it in your paper. • Two Sides of Citations: – In-text Citations: within the piece of work – Works Cited Page: stand alone reference at END of work In-text Citations: How to add your notes to your paper A citation is the author’s name and a page number in parenthesis at the end of the of the sentence. EX: (Author pg#) – IDEAL! According the article titled, “Human Logic”, it takes the brain 2.3 seconds to process new information (Collins 53). NOTE: If there is NO author is provided, use the FIRST word of the title, EX: (“Media” 17) NOTE: if there is NO page number just leave it off. EX: (Magee) How to add your notes to your paper After you add some outside information to your paper EXPLAIN why it is significant, WHY does it support your argument. This is what will make your paragraphs much stronger. Example information I will add: According to an article called, “Making Google”, Google Inc. has changed the way that advertising works. Google only charges advertisers for their ads when they are clicked on, this makes advertising free unless it draws customers, which has allowed even small business to get in the ad game (Grover 3). WebPages without a single author WEBPAGE: Abraham Lincoln's birthplace was designated as a National Historical Site in 1959 (National Park Service). NOTE: Internet citations follow the style of printed works. Personal or corporate author and page number should be given if they exist on the website. Example Paragraph with Citations In a shocking turn of events today, Roy Bryant and JW Milam have confessed the gory details of Emmett Till’s death. In admitting to killing him they have also disclosed some information about Emmett’s final stand against injustice. While the two stood on the banks of the Tallahatchie river Milam asked Till the following question, “You still as good as I am?” Amazingly, even after sustaining hours of torture and unspeakable atrocities, Till responded with a resounding, “Yeah” (WGBH Educational Foundation). This single word demonstrated Emmett’s deep seeded confidence in himself and his place in the world. This single stand against the brutal nature of racism is powerful and it would go on to inspire many other Americans, both white and black, to take a stand against injustice (Crowe 112). The brutality that was shown in Emmett Till’s murder will be a catalyst in the Civil Rights Movement. Example Works Cited Crowe, Chris. Getting Away with Murder . New York: Dial, 2003. Print.
