Started in Florence.
It begins..
• The word Renaissance means ‘rebirth’, or ‘revival’ and it was the
rebirth or revival of interest in the learnings of Ancient Greece and
Rome
• The learning of Greece and Rome had mostly been forgotten during
the Middle Ages, but now interest was being peaked once again
• The Renaissance had created a spirit of enquiry that spread across all
areas of knowledge- some historians look at the Renaissance as the
end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of our modern world

Why did it begin in Italy?
• Ruins of Ancient Rome – Artists were inspired by the Ancient Ruins of
Rome and began to study them.
• City-States- Competed to produce works of art
• Wealth of Italian Cities / Wealthy Patrons
• Fall of Constantinople- (now Istanbul)Many scholars left and brought
manuscripts with them
• Invention of the Printing Press- Work could now spread more rapidly
