WELCOME TO BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT AT SUNNYSIDE Please go through the folder on your child’s desk and complete any forms before we get started. (They should be clipped together.) Thank you. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND 1. I have an Elementary Educ. degree from West Chester Univ. in West Chester, PA. 2. I have a Gifted and Talented endorsement from Ball State Univ. in Muncie, IN. 3. I have a graduate degree in education from Anderson Univ. in Anderson, IN. 4. I have taught for 29 years. • PERSONAL BACKGROUND I am married to Brad Hayes. He works for AFLAC Ins. and also is a high school baseball coach. • I have two sons. Brett is 27 and a graduate from Ball State. He is employed by Wasson’s Nursery in Muncie. He and his wife are expecting my first grandchild in Oct. • Christopher is 24. He is an demolitions engineer (Sapper) in the Army. He is stationed in Hawaii after serving in Afghanistan. Our Weekly Schedule •Morning Procedures •Success 12:35-1:05 •Special Schedule •Art/Wednesday •Music/Thursday •P.E./Friday •Library/Monday •Computer Lab./Tuesday Language Arts •Most weeks students will have language arts homework in spelling and or Grammar Monday through Thursday. • In addition, your child must take at least 1 appropriate level AR test every week. (This will be discussed further in this talk.) •Spelling words will come home most Fridays. They can also be found on my web page under the title of the next story in the reading book. •Spelling tests are on Friday. Math • Your child will be using the Envision Math program with supplementation. • Most weeks your child will have math homework Monday - Thursday. This will include a basic fact practice wkst as well as lesson work. • Your child will be bringing his or her math book home most days to use as a reference tool. • Your child will have a basic facts timed test on Fridays. Science, Social Studies, and Writing • We switch back and forth from science to social studies. One science unit and one social studies unit are taught in a grading period. (More info. about this is on the web page.) • Students will be writing every week in their journals/Writer’s Notebook. The students will be learning about the Six Traits of Writing. Typical Instruction Includes…. Whole group instruction. Skills are taught during this time. Typical Practice Includes... Cooperative learning at stations. Skills are practiced at this time. ISTEP/IREAD TESTING: • The ISTEP test is taken in two parts in the spring. The first part is the Applied Skills in Language Arts and Math. The second part is the Multiple Choice Basic Skills in Language and Math. • This is the second year for the IREAD test. This is a test on reading skills which include phonics and comprehension. This test is given in the spring. It is possible will need to pass this test in order move on to 4rth grade. • If a students fails the IREAD test, he or she will have an opportunity for remediation during the summer. Upon completion of remediation classes, students will then have a second opportunity to pass the IREAD test. THE INSTRUCTIONAL TEAM PARENTS PRINCIPAL INDEPENDENT SUCCESSFUL LEARNING TEACHERS STUDENT WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? • Make sure your child is in the classroom ready to start the school day at 7:50. • Read to your child often, and have your child read to you. • Review math facts and spelling words in route to places. • Set up a structured time and place for completing homework. • Go over your child’s math and language arts homework. Help him/her study for tests. • Assume to role of co-learner. Ask your child questions about what he or she is learning. • Discuss any problems or celebrations with your child’s teacher. WHAT IS THE ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM? • Accelerated Reader is a motivational program that helps to produce life-long readers. • Accelerated Reader is a computerized selfassessment of reading comprehension. • Accelerated Reader is part of your child’s reading grade. ACCELRATED READER GRADES • Your child MUST read at least one A.R. book every week. This is an assignment. • I will take the top four Accelerated Reader grades for each 9 week grading period as reading grades. • If we read an A.R. book together as a class, it will not be counted as one of the four grades that I take for an independent reading grade. ACCELERATED READER INCENTIVES • Students will earn one bead on their necklace (in the hallway) for every point earned. • We will have an “AR Celebration Day” at midterm and again at the end of each grading period when students will earn prizes for their AR points. WHAT TO DO ABOUT BOOK ORDERS • Book orders for Scholastic come home Periodically throughout the year. • I will hand them out on a Monday; orders are due by Friday of the same week. • If you want to write a check please make it payable to the book club. • It would be appreciated if the order forms and money were placed in envelopes or baggies. • Exact change is preferred. Transportation/Dismissal 1. Parents must drive around to pick up their child or walk them from the sidewalk to the parking lot. 2. Students are not to walk through the parking lot to find their ride. 3. A child must have a note or phone call to the office if their customary mode of transportation home is changed. PARTY INVITATIONS • If party invitations are to be handed out at school then all girls/boys in the class must be invited.
