QUEENSLAND CHILDREN’S WEEK ASSOCIATION Inc PR0GRAM SPONSORS & SUPPORTED BY His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) Governor-Genera l of the Commonwealth of Australia Message for Children's Week 2015 Children are so precious to all of us, they represent our future and they have the enthusiasm and potential to change our world and make it a better place. Our great responsibility is to value our children, to celebrate them for who they are and appreciate them for what they can be. We must do everything we can to ensure children in our society are safe and happy and have every opportunity to fulfil their own dreams and aspirations; this can only happen if we protect and promote their human rights. The theme for Children’s Week 2015 is ‘Children’s Rights are Human Rights’ and it celebrates the 251h anniversary since Australia signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This theme is so important because it reminds us that, like everyone, children have human rights and it is critical that these rights are revered and respected. I congratulate the Children's Week Council for their dedication and commitment and I wish children and adults alike all the very best for a successful week. GOVERNMENT HOUSE CANBERRA ACT 2600 AUSTRALIA TELEPHONE +61(2) 6283 3533 FACSIMILE +61(2) 6281 3760 WWW .GG .GOV.AU Children’s Week Patron Governor of Queensland, His Excellency Paul deJersey AC G OVE RN M E N T H OU S E QUEENSLAND Message from the Governor of Queensland for 2015 Queensland Children's Week It is less than a century since the first international children's rights treaty was adopted - the League of Nations' Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1924. Since then, the concept that children's rights are human rights has expanded, culminating in the UN General Assembly's adoption of the 54 articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. Australia became a signatory the following year and the Convention has now been adopted and ratified by all but two of the world's 192 nations. However, children's rights remain under threat, even in prosperous and peaceful nations such as ours where childhood is recognised as a time of life when special care, assistance and protection are needed. It is therefore particularly pleasing that Children's Week associations throughout Australia have chosen to focus on Articles 29 and 31 of the1989 Convention as the theme in this 25th anniversary year. These two articles emphasise the importance of giving children the leisure to fully develop their personality and talents, and of teaching them respect for their parents, their own culture, and the cultures of others. Over the past 44 years, the members of the Queensland Children's Week Association have given countless hours of voluntary effort to advance the rights of the child and to bring the value and needs of children to public attention. As Patron, I thank them and their sponsors and supporters for this ongoing dedication, and congratulate them on the excellent program of activities for Children's Week 2015. His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC Governor of Queensland Message from the State Ambassador for Queensland Children's Week 2015, Steve Armitage The Queensland Family and Child Commission strives to ensure children and young people are safe, well and supported by capable families and communities. Celebrating Children's Week is a timely reminder of our shared responsibility to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children and young people so they can grow, develop and have the opportunities to follow their dreams and life goals. It also reminds us of the importance of listening to their needs. Children's rights are human rights and this is the theme behind Children's Week 2015. I have a life-long passion for social policy and I am proud to support this message. Throughout my 30-plus years working across the human services field, I have witnessed major reforms in child protection in Queensland. At the heart of these reforms lie the fundamental idea that child’s rights are human rights. As we celebrate 25 years since Australia signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, it is important to take stock and look to the future to see what else can be done for children in Queensland to give them the best possible start in life. Having an open dialogue and educating families about quality child care and child rearing helps to empower families and communities . This also means providing the right information and support services at the right time to better equip families across Queensland Children play an important role in society and we need to encourage them to speak up and have their voices heard. Every Queenslander has a responsibility to ensure children and young people can grow in safe and happy surroundings and collectively we need to champion their rights. Events like Children's Week help us to celebrate the wonder and joy of childhood, while increasing community awareness about children's needs and how we can all respect their rights. I would like to extend my thanks to the Queensland Children's Week Association for their hard work and dedication to this cause. It is an honour to be the State Ambassador for Queensland Children's Week and I look forward to celebrating this important occasion with all of you. Steve Armitage . . We organise a static display with images, books and materials that supports the theme for the year. A copy of the UNC for the Rights of Children is distributed to all families. We ask each child “What is the best thing about being a ‘kid’? This year we’ll also ask “Why is it important for adults to help kids?” Responses are displayed around the Kindy room and children illustrate their response. We also host an Art and Photographic Auction – children have painted self portraits and selected their favourite digital print to exhibit during an art show. All families are invited to the night time event and proceeds are donated to a local charity. We raffle framing vouchers donated from a local business and money raised is used to purchase new art resources for children. From 19-25 October, thousands of people from across the country are heading out into their backyards, local parks, or favourite outdoor spaces to take part in the second annual AUSSIE BACKYARD BIRD COUNT! To get involved all you need is 20 minutes, your outdoor space of choice, and some keen eyesight (or binoculars). It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or an expert—we’ll be there to help you out along the way. Simply record the birds you know and look up those you don’t on our new Aussie Bird Count app or our through our website (www.aussiebirdcount.org.au). You’ll instantly see live statistics and information on how many people are taking part near you and the number of birds and species counted across your neighbourhood and the whole of Australia! Not only will you get to know your feathered neighbours, but you’ll be contributing to a vital pool of information from across the nation that will help us see how Australian birds are faring. Last year we counted 800,000 birds, this year let’s make it one million. Get your friends and family together, head into the great outdoors and start counting!
