Dr. Charles Best Secondary School
SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS AND BURSARIES for the CLASS of 2013
General Application Procedure
ALL INTERNAL LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Use this one application form (pg 3) to apply for the Internal Local Scholarships listed on
page 4. Fill out the financial aid form (pg 5) to show financial need if necessary. External
Local Scholarships (listed on pg 6-8) are not administered by Charles Best Secondary and
require separate application forms.

A complete APPLICATION PACKAGE must include:
□ a completed application form (page 3)
□ a personal letter (500 word max)—be sure to put your name on the top of each
page
□ two reference letters—one from school and one from the community.
□ an interim transcript (request from the office, the career center or counsellors)
□ a current resume—be sure to include all volunteer work
□ a completed financial information form FOR BURSARIES ONLY

A personal letter should NOT be a repeat of your resume! Tell the scholarship
committee what makes you unique—what are you passionate about? How does this
relate to your future goals and plans? See “Tips for Success: How to make your Essay
Count” on the next page.

Reference letters should be requested AT LEAST TWO WEEKS in advance of the due date.
Application package due by Monday April 22, 2013 3:30 pm
 Hand completed package to Mr. Chang in Counselling or Mrs. Baker in the Career Center
Read criteria carefully for every award you apply for.
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!
GOOD LUCK!
Please Note: The decisions made by the Scholarship Committee are based on careful
consideration of many factors and are final
Tips for Success: How to Make Your Essay Count











Focus on one activity or event; you have listed your range of accomplishments in your
resume and do not need to repeat yourself.
Portray your character, leadership ability, vision and what makes you unique. Give
specifics.
Be original but not bizarre; be yourself!
Don’t “thesaurize” your composition, i.e. don’t use big words!
Spend time on the introduction: don’t summarize but do create mystery and intrigue.
Body paragraphs must relate to the introduction; conclusions are crucial!
Do something else; spend time away from your draft to decide if you still consider your
topic worthwhile.
Get your family, friends, and teachers to edit and critique your essay.
Edit! Revise! Edit! Revise! Edit!
