Sometimes we need to represent
the same amount in different
ways.
For example, there are a number
of different ways we could
represent one dollar.
One dollar could be:
1 loonie
4 quarters
10 dimes
• The ability to represent the
same amount in different ways
is important for mathematical
operations as well.
• Converting between the three
fundamental forms (decimal,
percent, fraction) is where we
will begin our study.
Suppose you scored 15 out of 20 on
a quiz.
15
=This
0.75is the fraction form of
20
your result
To convert0.75
to percent,
X 100 multiply
= 75% the
decimal by 100
To convert to decimal, perform the
division 15 / 20. You may use a
calculator for these if you need to.

Remember:
• Fractions represent part of a whole.
• A Fraction is a division statement
• For Decimals:

.
3 7 9
Percent (out of 100)
• 33% = 33 / 100
• 79% = 79 / 100
