Sometimes we need to represent the same amount in different ways. For example, there are a number of different ways we could represent one dollar. One dollar could be: 1 loonie 4 quarters 10 dimes • The ability to represent the same amount in different ways is important for mathematical operations as well. • Converting between the three fundamental forms (decimal, percent, fraction) is where we will begin our study. Suppose you scored 15 out of 20 on a quiz. 15 =This 0.75is the fraction form of 20 your result To convert0.75 to percent, X 100 multiply = 75% the decimal by 100 To convert to decimal, perform the division 15 / 20. You may use a calculator for these if you need to. A few more examples: 18 20 13 16 = 0.9 (divided) = 90% (Multiplied by 100%) = 0.8125 = 81.25% Convert the following (try them first, then click to see the answer) Fraction Decimal Percent 75 100 3 = 4 Fully reduce all fractions!!! ? 0.75 ? 75% Convert the following Fraction 3 15 1 = 5 ? Decimal Percent ? 20% 0.2 ? Convert the following Fraction 45 100 9 = 20 ? Decimal Percent ? 45% 0.45 Convert the following Fraction 3 7 Decimal Percent ? 43% 0.43 ? Convert the following Fraction 122 100 61 = 50 ? Decimal Percent ? 122% 1.22 ? See Sheet Remember: • Fractions represent part of a whole. • A Fraction is a division statement • For Decimals: 5 1 7 . 3 7 9 Percent (out of 100) • 33% = 33 / 100 • 79% = 79 / 100 • Putting it all together….
