Week #7 Quarter 2 (11/25-11/28) (calendar site) Monday, 11/25 I.S. Learning Goal: •I can describe the properties of matter Have out: Properties of Matters Notes Matter Worksheet Homework: Daily Question: What is matter? Activities/Assignments: 1. Properties of Matters Notes 2. Matter Worksheet Chemistry unit test, stamp sheet and notebooks due 11/ 27 Mixture Made of two or more substances- elements, compounds or both- that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined. Heterogeneous Mixture You can see the different parts Homogeneous Mixture So evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts Heat- transfer of energy – Exothermic- heat energy EXITS the system - ex. Combustion, burning http://www.graspr.com/videos/potassium-permanganate-and-glycerine-2 Salt An example of an exothermic reaction is the mixture of sodium metal and chlorine gas which yields table salt. p://www.schooltube.com/video/2fa9cb3e39064832b31d/Reaction-of-Sodium-and-Chlorine 2Na(s) + Cl2(g) 2NaCl(s) + energy Endothermic- heat energy ENTERS the system - surroundings usually feel cooler ex. Cold packs, melting ice How do cold packs work? The outer pouch contains water. The inner pouch contains ammonium-nitrate. When you “pop” the inner pouch, the chemical reaction absorbs heat energy from the surroundings. This is an endothermic reaction. The temperature of the solution falls to about 35 F for 10 to 15 minutes.
