February 2016
Notes from the President, Ruth Gray
Wow ladies, at the end of every year, I say where did that year go??? It does seem to go faster as
we get (shall we say)…………… a little more mature. Well, let’s at least, make 2016 count. We have so
much going on with the club. Again I am amazed that a need is expressed and fulfilled. Do you
realize what a great group we have? Samantha Price has agreed to co-chair the “Ladies Night Out”,
I will help her get it started until someone else comes forward to co-chair. More details later.
Continuing with our theme, may I introduce Diane Effinger (in her own words).
Named Diane Theresa Borales, born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. My early years
were uneventful, but I did enjoy the simple lifestyle, spending a lot of time outdoors and in the
beautiful warm waters of Hawaii. Yes I surfed and was told that I had more guts than brains.
My work life started as a bookkeeper, (long before today's software programs), then on to
working as an administrative assistant. Somewhere between, I owned and operated a deli/sandwich
shop for 5 years. This was an experience that I truly loved, but it was so consuming. When Jim, my
husband to be, proposed, he made it clear that the deli would have to go. So then it was back to the
office. I was very fortunate to be hired by a National RE Development Company. As an Executive
Assistant to several Senior VPs, I found myself working with generous men and women, who were
willing to share their knowledge with me. I became a "Jack of all trades". Retired in 2000.
Back to 1980, which is when I moved to San Diego. It was there that I met the love of my
life, Jim Effinger. Together from previous marriages, we have 6 children, 17 grandchildren, 1 great
grandchild and another on the way. (When asked if we moved to Franklin to be near our family, I
jokingly reply, "No, we ran away from home".
In May of 2006, Jim was ready to retire and leave California. Searching the Internet,
Nashville caught our attention. In June we came for a visit, and within a week, purchased our home
in Polk Place. Two months later, Jim and I began our first cross country road trip to our home in
Franklin. I never dreamed I would live so far from the Ocean.
Linda Decker, also a WCNC member and resident of Polk Place, introduced me to the Club.
And as they say, the rest is history. Most of you know me because of my continuous involvement. I
have enjoyed serving as Treasurer and President, chairing the Newsletter, Reservations, SNL,
Dominos, Table Decorations, Webpage Manager, and the "2015-16" Directory. The best part of
serving in the many activities, is meeting the wonderful ladies who have stepped up to co-chair and
help.
My hobbies include gardening, cooking, and sewing. Thanks to my WCNC friends, I have
recently learned to quilt and knit. I also love traveling and spending time with our large family.
BOARD MEETING: The scheduled Board Meeting is February 9th at Shirley Moody’s home at 10:00
a.m. Please contact Shirley at moodym259@att.net or 615.595.0945 to let her know that you will be
there.

Eric Jacobson: CEO of Battle of Franklin Trust will be speaking at the February meeting.
Jacobson oversees operations of the Carter House and Carnton Plantation and is a renowned Civil

mission of the Trust for many years. He is completely dedicated to preserving and maintaining our
historic sites and spreading a greater understanding of the Battle of Franklin. He has assisted a

PICTURE DIRECTORY
WCNC is working on a Photo Directory. We have a large membership, and this photo directory will
help all to put names and faces together. Approximately 70 members have had their picture taken,
and have been pleased with the results. I will be at the February luncheon to continue taking
pictures. If you want your picture in the directory, I will be near the entrance.
