Cook Counseling Center
The Cook Counseling Center provides
students a place for individual counseling, group
counseling, psychiatric services, and sport
psychology. The professional staff is committed to
providing high quality counseling for students with
these issues. The main purpose of the counseling
center is for students to feel comfortable with
themselves, groups, and the community at large. This
could be a huge resource at times of high stress and
confusion. The counseling center provides someone
to talk to about anything from depression, anxiety,
uncertainty about college and studying, to even
personal relationship problems. Especially for first
year students this can really come in handy, because
it’s common to have these problems during the first
year on your own.

Schiffert Health Center
The Schiffert Health Center is a
resource that students have access to through
Virginia Tech. SHC provides medical attention
when needed, pharmaceutical services, health
education, and many other health related services.
This resource is very important to be aware of for
when students become ill, whether with just the
common cold or something more serious. There
are convenient clinics available, different billing
options, many different health education options, a
pharmacy, X-ray services, and even dietician
services. For any health related issue or question a
student may have, Schiffert Health Center can

Comm Lab
Students are provided help by graduate and
trained undergraduate students for all parts of the speech
making processes. The services provided range from topic
selection to oral practice. Coaching is available as well as
video-taping capabilities to assure students they can be
confident in their speech making abilities. The coaches will
also work with students on specific details of speech
giving such as body language, facial expressions, and
gestures. They will also advise on Interpersonal and
Group Skills so students are able to effectively and
successfully work in project groups. This is a great
opportunity for students that haven’t been practicing
public speaking to start getting the experience before
getting graded on an oral exam or speech. It’s an
unlimited resource for students who are having trouble
or just want helpful hints on public speaking, which can
become extremely resourceful throughout the school
year.

Writing Center
The Writing Center is somewhere that
students can go to get help with their writing. The
Writing Center Coaches offer guidance with
student’s papers. They can help students
overcome hurdles they run into when writing.
The coaches do not proofread papers for
students, but they do give instruction one-on-one
with each student. This is a great resource,
especially as freshmen who have yet to get
accustomed to the rigorous writing assignments
that college students experience.

Innovation Space
The Innovation Space will come in handy
for students that have media related projects. Any
student, faculty member, or even the general public
can come in and get help with projects or just
general questions they have with technology. They
give students the hands on help that is needed. It’s as
simple as just walking in and asking for help, however
it is encouraged to make an appointment. If students
need to make any kind of movie or video for a class,
they allow students to rent out their equipment for 3
business days. On the Innovation Space’s website, it
shows what equipment is available and how many
items are left, so that students don’t waste time going
all the way to Innovation Space to find out that the
camera they needed is out of stock. This space will be
helpful for anyone that needs to do a video project
or just needs help with his/her computer.
