(for good standing at SIUE).

term to be eligible to compete
in the subsequent term.

Must declare a major no later
than the beginning of their fifth

Academic Services for
Student-Athletes at SIUE

University 112 for Student-Athletes:
– Mandatory for freshman student-athletes
– Topics covered include study skills, alcohol use, personal responsibility,
citizenship, utilization of campus resources, career exploration, leadership
and time management
– Course is team taught by the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative and
another representative of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Academic Advising/Monitoring:
– Undeclared student-athletes receive guidance pertaining to their academics,
major selection and career selection from the Academic Advisor for Athletics.
– Academic Advisor for Athletics monitors NCAA satisfactory progress and
continuing eligibility requirements for all student-athletes.
– Those students who are determined to be “at-risk” based on their grade
point average/test scores are monitored on a continuous basis. Frequent
correspondence between the Academic Advisor for Athletics and the studentathlete’s instructors occur throughout the semester. The Academic Advisor
for Athletics and student-athlete meet on a regular basis to discuss academic
progress.

Mid-Term Grade Reports:
– Sent to each instructor/faculty member who has a studentathlete in his/her course approximately two weeks before the
last date to drop a course with a “W”.
– The comments allow the Academic Advisor for Athletics to
conduct an academic intervention before the last date to drop
a course with a grade of “W” if needed, as well as positively
reinforce student success.
– Return rate for Fall 2005: 78.45%

Study Tables
– Held and monitored by each team’s coach.
– Most freshman/transfer student-athletes and others
recommended by the Academic Advisor or coach (based on
gpa) are required to attend monitored study tables.
– Study tables are held in various locations due to space issues.

Champs/Life Skills
– Series of workshops that focus on academic excellence,
athletic excellence, personal and career development and
community service efforts.
– Each student-athlete must participate in two Champs/Life Skills
workshops and one community service project each year.
