“Jenny Kissed Me” by James Henry Leigh Hunt
Jenny kissed me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief, who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in!
Say I'm weary, say I'm sad,
Say that health and wealth have missed me,
Say I'm growing old, but add,
Jenny kissed me.

Jenny kissed me when we met,
Fond reminiscence
Jumping from the chair she sat in;
Amused, affectionate
Time, you thief, who love to get
Sweets into your list,
Still amused (now by Time, rather than by
Jenny), but growing a little wary, a little
scornful
Put that in!
Disdainful
Say I’m weary,
Say I’m sad,
Say that health and wealth have missed me,
Say I’m growing old,
Shrugging
Candid, a little sad
Lightly or playfully regretful
Real regret
But add,
Rallying, insistent
Jenny kissed me.
Marveling, contented
We Wear the Mask
Name:_________________________________________________Date:_____________________ Period:__________
BY PAUL LAWRENCE DUNBAR
We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.
Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!
