AP English Lit. /Comp. Mrs. Tracy The Sun Also Rises Expository Essay For this assignment, you will write a well-organized essay of at least five paragraphs. The essay should be at least about two pages with a minimum of five complete sentences per paragraph. Choose ONE of the following topics regarding Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises: Select ONE of the following characters and explore the ways in which this character is a reflection of the “Lost Generation”: Jake Barnes, Brett Ashley, Mike Campbell, or Robert Cohn. (You could also to choose to argue how Robert Cohn is NOT a reflection of the “Lost Generation.”) In what ways are the characters able to find meaning in the novel, if only on a temporary basis? What do they value? Explore the significance of the various settings in the novel and their relationship to the characters’ feelings and behavior. Explore the ways in which The Sun Also Rises is a Modernist novel. You also have the option of creating your own essay topic, which you must discuss and get approved by me before writing. Important Requirements: - Provide and explain major examples to support your thesis statement. You must include at least one significant quotation from the novel for EACH of your supporting paragraphs. - Type and double-space your essay, using a readable font no larger than 12 point. - Include an original and meaningful title for your essay. Center and put space between your title and your essay. No quotation marks, no underlining, no cover page. You will also be graded especially on the following: - Use of standard parts of an essay (full-length, formal introduction with thesis statement as last sentence, transitions, an insightful conclusion, etc.) - Use of correct spelling and grammar - Use of an objective voice (no first or second-person personal pronouns) - Use of citations for quotations from novel in MLA format This essay will count towards the Essay/Project portion of your grade. There is a rough draft and a revised draft that must be completed in addition to the final draft of the essay. They will count as homework assignments.
